I'm heading out tonight for a long drive, I could really use a new audio book, but I'm just not finding anything that really grabs my interest: What I'd like: Dark Ages: My primary interest, given Saga and the Duxes, but I poked through Audible but didn't see anything that looked like a general history through the period. FIW: Already have the War that Made America. Nappies: Listened to the Napoleon Podcast and Fisher's Napoleon. WW2: Mostly interested in late war western Europe. Listened to Beevor's D-Day, Sloan's Brotherhood of Heroes, Atkinson's An Army at Dawn and the Day of Battle. Romans: Listened to the History of Rome podcast, O'Connell's the Ghosts of Cannae, Dando-Collins' the Ides. Suggestions? |

You can't do much better than Hardcore History: dancarlin.com/disp.php/hh He had a 4-part series called "Ghosts of the Ostfront" about the Eastern Front in WW2, and just finished a short series about the dark ages that sounds like exactly what you're looking for. They are what I would call light history, in that they are entertaining and pleasurable to listen to, rather than dry recitations of genealogies and facts. The older episodes (including Ghosts of the Ostfront) are for sale rather than free download, but worth every penny in my opinion. |

Here's a historical fiction series that I think is fantastic: Philip Kerr's Bernie Gunther series. Starts with 'Berlin Noir'. Bernie is a cop who works in Berlin during the Third Reich (very anti-Nazi), later for the Abwehr and then does post war work as a private detective. Rolls up WWII with Sam Spade-type detective stories. Historical fiction, not history, but very well researched. I learned much from this series. |

Are you familiar with this podcast?12byzantinerulers.com Nope! That looks very good, though, thanks! You can't do much better than Hardcore History: I'm familiar with that. Popular, although I find him overly dramatic. Just not my style. Similarly with History According to Bob-- I just don't like the delivery. |

Do a search on Librivox.org for "history" and you will find 80+ audio books! They cover from ancient greece to the first world war. I have already listened to about 70 of these books. Paul |
