Wow indeed !

Midpoint26 Jul 2012 11:32 a.m. PST

That would be 50% more than [say] a copy of the BP variant Pike and Shotte.

Wonder what the price will be?

Timmo uk26 Jul 2012 11:54 a.m. PST

Might have to buy that one.

Midpoint26 Jul 2012 11:56 a.m. PST

Murphy,

They do say there will be a price increase for that one issue – doesn't say how much though.

Apparently if you subscribe before the end of August you won't pay any extra…

Mako1126 Jul 2012 12:31 p.m. PST

Man, that's a lot of ads…..

Rrobbyrobot26 Jul 2012 1:02 p.m. PST

I say Mako11's an optimist.
But still, that's a whole bunch of magazine.

PatrickWR26 Jul 2012 1:26 p.m. PST

Yeah, hoping that's because there will be lots of ads.

I'd like to see a "WI through the ages" section. Younger gamers might be amazed how things have changed (but, they might not, or might not care, "whatever")

Cardinal Ximenez26 Jul 2012 2:37 p.m. PST

Awesome!! 299 pages of Flames of War!!! ;)

Just kidding of course. Probably only 290 pages.

Does it include Flames of War version 4.0, a trifecta of codexes covering the neutral powersl; early, mid and late war?

Maybe it is full of 40K ads…

We can hope beyond hopw that it actually contains a series of articles on Wargaming. :)

Actually I think that the content of WI is quite diverse. Always FOW but also a wide array of other subjects. See below. If you are interested in them is of course personal taste.

I'm with you, Schulein – I think WI coverage is nicely diverse.
I have no interest in FOW, but buy WI regularly now that Battlefront are running it. They've made it into a good quality mag. And they are more than happy to promote other rules and companies – I bought HC and Saga off the back of WI articles.
I can only assume all those complaining that it is a purely FOW mag haven't actually bothered reading it.

The theme of WI 300 is 'last stands'. WI contacted a lot of writers, myself included, to contribute articles; mine is "The Last of Spartacus". I know there's one on Camerone (because that was my first offer) and many others.

Dave Taylor told me that many articles ran over 5000 words – mine did – and that it was going to be a hefty issue.

Yes, I'm sure there will be Flames of War material and advertising too.

I often wonder how many of the people who complain about wargames magazines have actually submitted an article to one.

Okay, I admit to complaining about magazines that say they'll pay, but don't. I don't mind volunteering my time and efforts – I just want to know that's what I'm doing. And the new WI management pay on time and, by industry standards, quite well. Previous management? Don't ask.

Previous management? Don't ask.

Don't have to – they got a freebie from me in the June 1998 issue ;-)

With a 19% advertising page use (based on Schulein page count), the advertising would cover more than the cost to print. However one question is how many of the adverts are from the company who owns the magazine which would be zero income. If that percentage is small, I do not understand why the magazine is so expensive?

In regards to the 23%, almost 1/4 of the magazine devoted to Flames of War, that is understandable. Both are their own product. They are promoting their own product and supporting their adverts as well. The submitted articles from fans and supporters should be very numerous thus offering a large number of articles to chose from.

By the way what were the subject matter focus of the articles on painting and photographing. I was just curious.

Hi 'RudyNelson',
The 'Photographing Miniatures' article in issue 297, wasn't directed at any particular scale of figures; the core photographic principles are the same, which I hope was apparent in the article. To illustrate this fact, the photographs supporting the article were of 6mm, 10mm, 15mm and 28mm figures. Photographic information and advice were an overview of the techniques that I've found 'work for me', and included choice of equipment, the relationship between aperture, shutter speed and depth of field, 'lighting' and reflectors, and some other useful info.
