I have subbed to WI for some years but, if I am honest, I find it increasingly light-weight when it comes to content. There are several magazines out now but I was looking for reccomendations about what is good out there, maybe a bit less dumbed-down than WI?

Chortle Fezian25 Jul 2012 10:34 p.m. PST

I really like Battle Games. The magazine has a good variety of articles in each issue, the writers write engagingly, and I enjoy the content.

BTW, Wargames Vault are selling "The Courier" magazine as a bundle deal. These magazines, although dating back to the 80s, are marvellous. A bundle of five issues costs $12. USD I bought the lot. They don't make them like they used to!

Gav Tyler25 Jul 2012 10:47 p.m. PST

Battle Games and Miniature Wargames are both really good at the moment!

I like the "chatty" tone of BG, and MW seems to be leaning towards that too.

Keep meaning to resub to the SOA – could someone poke me with a stick until I do it ? grin

Battlegames and Lone Warrior are my magazines at the moment.

BlackSmoke26 Jul 2012 2:23 a.m. PST

It's WSS for me at the moment. If Battlegames was on the bookshelf I may buy it but I like to see what's in there before I buy. WSS generally has something that I want to read and I like the style of the mag and it's definitely improved since Karwansaray took over.

scrivs26 Jul 2012 2:27 a.m. PST

I read both WSS and WI and like both.

battleeditor26 Jul 2012 2:54 a.m. PST

@GoodWood: you can view the contents of each issue by visiting link (these are the digital versions -- paper subscriptions are available via subscribeme.to/battlegames )

Click on the cover image and you can view thumbnails of all the content and enlarged views of the first three pages (including the editorial/contents).

You'll also find the upcoming contents of every issue listed on my 'Editor's Blog' on the Atlantic website at link and on my FaceBook page at facebook.com/battlegames (along with lots of other stuff there).

If Battlegames was on the bookshelf I may buy it

Henry has said that that is very unlikely.

WSS, only one I buy these days…

I absolutely LOVE Wargames Soldiers and Strategy. Published by the fine fellows who do Ancient Warfare and Medieval Warfare Magazines. Lovely stuff – very relevant – and a great mix of articles.

MacrossMartin26 Jul 2012 7:21 a.m. PST

I actually like WI, even though I'm not a FoW fan. Lots of inspiring pewter porn, sometimes articles on conflicts I hadn't considered. Austro-Prussian War in 6mm a few issues back was an insight into a campaign – and a scale – that exemplifies this.

MW's Sci-Fi coverage is fun, and I enjoy reading it, but its not particularly useful. Strip away the chuckles, and its mostly a selection of links to various manufacturers. I wish there was more inclination towards articles about non-mainstream SF and Fantasy, but the howls from the historically entrenched would echo around the planet.

I just subbed to WSS, Ancient Wargare and Medieval Warfare in the electronic addition. Pretty much all three for the price of one paper edition nowadays. I have just ordered a tablet that I am going to try to shift over for my leisure type reading.

Love Battlegames and WSS but I wish there was a place to buy single digital issues of both.

AncientWarfare26 Jul 2012 9:40 a.m. PST

M1Fanboy, if I'm not mistaken I think Henry Hyde offers / will offer single back issues of Battlegames PDFs at least those pre-dating the Atlantic takeover. WSS PDF back issues can be bought at link

I genuinely thought this topic was going to be about this:

But it's actually much more interesting – Battlegames for me.

Right now I subscribe to WI, it was a Christmas gift from my wife, but I am not 100% sure if I will renew my subscription or not. What I would really like to see is a digital version of WI so that I could get it on my Nook. First company that comes out with a digital version will probably get my money.

Whilst re-decorating I bought a copy of "What Tiler?" but it was all about a medieval revolt !!!!

Battlegames and WSS by subscription, MW at the news stand. haven't bothered with WI for over a year, and can't see me bothering again.

stecal28 Jul 2012 4:55 a.m. PST

WSS subs. also pickup WI in the store when it has articles that interest me. Also trying AW for a year right now

AS video killed the radio star,
the internet will kill the wargames mag.

I use to buy for adds of new stuff coming through.
Sites like this destroy their relevance .
Blogs, podcats, many bad and a few good have articles of
the same quality.

I suppose that I must be a latter day 'Luddite'. For me, nothing will ever replace the pleasure of holding and reading a well produced book, particularly not the internet. Admittedly this is largely because I spend virtually all my working day on a computer, so when it comes to my leisure time, I try to get as far away from my computer as possible!

Obviously you can print out digital downloads of various wargames publications, and downloaded books, but unless you have:
a) a good quality printer,
b) print everything on photo quality paper,
the final result never matches up to a well produced magazine or book in my opinion.

Still each to his own. I for one however, will continue to purchase 'conventional' books and magazines for as long as they are available, but I accept that I might becoming an increasingly 'rare breed'.

OSchmidt22 Aug 2012 4:54 a.m. PST

Don't buy any wargames magazines. Haven't found any which are worth the time, let alone the price. The last really good magazines were The Courier and Historical gamer. I'm much more a content person than a "pewter porn" person. The last thing I want to see is staged photos of other people's miniatires.

The magazines I do buy are model railroader magazines simply because they are chock full of information on building structures, terrain, super-deteailing and how to compose a realistic and belieavable scene. There really only are two, "Model Railroader" and "Model Railroad Craftsman" and they cost, I think about $36 USD bucks each for a years subscription of 12 issues. Admittedly a lot of it is early 19th century onward, but the same principles can b applied to structures and scenes before the advent of the railroad, and scenery is scenery since the earth acquired a surface.

Of the three biggest, Battlegames by Henry Hyde is beest but still lightweight. The rest are cotton candy.

Peeler31 Aug 2012 6:14 p.m. PST

Good points about the Railway mags, they do have some quality scenery in them, if you have the space to do similar. And the ability!

On wargames mags, I think WI & MW have both improved lately, but I have to say that BG is the only one that I read from cover to cover. As opposed to being "lightweight", I'd say that it is pleasant, friendly, easy reading – encompassing both old style ( school) and new – like a modern version of the better sort of "old style mags".
Best described, I'MO, as a "happy read", and one that I look forward to, with nothing to fall out with.

Oudinot14 Sep 2012 2:22 p.m. PST

Battlegames. occasionally WSS, gave up on WI ages ago.
