Easy, this one. Pre- Columbus Atlantic crossing by Irish monks landed primarily in southern part of the N. American land mass.

They brought back barbecue.

Thus, beer consumption rose.

End of story.

Thanks for the information. Oddly the English seemed to be wine drinkers in the 100 yrs war period. A similar study would be interesting.
