OK simple question:
Did the drummers in Scott's Brigade wear red coats or did they match the grey of the rest of the troops? Making dinner for the family and I am too lazy to go try and look through my Ospreys etc. :)
Thanks
Mike

A simple but interesting question that is not answered in "A Most Warlike Appearance: Uniforms, Flags and Equipment of the United States in the War of 1812", Rene Chartrand, 2011, Service Publications; or "Military Uniforms in America Years of Growth 1796-1851", by the Company of Military Historians. However,in "The Soldiers of 1814" edited by Donald Graves,pg 32 drummer Jarvis Hanks of the 11th Infantry of Scott's Brigade states "Before we crosed over into Canada, we were all furnished with a grey suit of clothes. consisting of a round-about, or sailor's jacket and pantaloons."
So, I suspect that all enlisted men of Scott's Brigade, including drummers, were clothed in grey, particularly as Scott ordered that of the few blue uniforms that were availble were not to be used so as to give a uniform color of grey throught his brigade.
However, prints (famous print of Scott's brigade at the Battle of Chippawa) show the officers of Scott's brigade dressed in the new blue uniforms with white or buff pants.

The officers in this period purchased thier own uniforms and were able to follow the regulations more closely. For my War of 1812 Americans the uniforms of the rank and file range from blue, brown, grey, black to drab while the officers are in blue and the drummers generally in red, although with Scott's Brigade I did make an educated guess and painted drummers in grey.

Here is an option?

Yea, I was looking at that plate or at least a similar one on a French language 1812 site. Might look nice to have the different regiments with different coats i.e. all grey 11th but red coated drummer for the 22nd?
