Some pictures of a recent game I played using the Pike and Shotte rules for the first time. The rules seemed to capture the feel of the TYW and I'll definatley be using them again link |

Scotty08, What is it about the rules that "capture the feel of the TYW"? Cheers, Robert |

Robert For me, I like the way that the Pike and Musket operate as individual units but are still very dependant upon in each other. The ratings that Neal assigned to the Swedes allowed them to close up with the enemy while taking significant punishment before allowing the Pike to pass through and engage. |

What appeals to me is the deployment looks "right". You could deploy in double lines in other rules, however, often the mechanisms do not encourage or support such formations, interpenetration gets messy etc. |

Thanks for the specifics. I have the impression the player is rewarded for historical deployment rather than "this suits the rule system better" option. A Swedish brigade deployment works well then. Cheers, |

An all pike army will demolish a pike and shot army just about every time. |

Yes, I've read that pike is overpowered before too. I don't see it. And even if it's true, simply play with historical forces. |

"An all pike army will demolish a pike and shot army just about every time." Not our experience. Plus, if you're so hung up on points values instead of historical proportions, then shouldn't you be playing something like Flames of War? There are loads of games where you can get your tournament on, and the books by Warlord Games aren't written with these in mind. Just a thought. Leigh |

An all pike army will demolish a pike and shot army just about every time. ----------------------- what would be the point though as such didn't exist |

If you have ever read anything I've ever written on these boards you would know that I'm no where near hung up on points value. The problems still exists. Pike units are overpowered in close combat. Even with historical forces you see a historical tactics when people play to the rules as they are written. I've seen it in every game I've played so far. If you want to say that they should play historically as well as field historical armies that would be one thing but the rules would be better if they were written so that they rewarded historical play. |

Some friends of mine who are big ECW buffs (Forlorn Hope type hardcore gamers) played it recently at a big game on the Naseby site and expecting not to like it thought it very good and giving a good historical feel – as to pike units being overpowered – well, are they not fighting other pikes anyway so its an even match – any game where they end up fighting the shot element means something has gone wrong with the use of the latter. |
