Looking for inspiration to scratch build (not to buy).

- Anyone made any 15mm SF civilian hover cars or other utility vehicles using just common household items?
- Got pics?
- What common bits did you use?
- What glues worked best with them?
- What paints worked best?
- Got a tutorial?

Thanks,

Dan

I've seen some air-rafts (open-topped air-cars), made from those little, flat, plastic tape-strip dispensers. Not sure what they are really called, but they hold thin, colored, plastic acetate tabs for marking in books, or for where to sign in multipage documents.

You can find them near the tape dispensers, and post-it notes, in the office supply stores.

I imagine you could also take some of the more modern vehicles, pull their wheels off, fill with putty and sand them flat, and they could represent grav, or hover cars.

I haven't seen more than just a few quick flashes of the vehicles in the new Total Recal movie ads, but from those, they look good.

I have 100 15mm cheap plastic cars from one of the Chinese model companies. My original intent was to use a bunch as shot/blown up scenery, but would like to use others as sci-fi civilians too, so I like Mako's suggestion, but would love to hear any others.

Check out this link, about 3/4th of the way down the page. Apparently, he used the Listerine Breath Mint Strips container for these.

They are light gray, green, and tan. It appears he added a small windscreen with a bit of styrene stripping, two seats to the front, and a bench seat to the rear. A couple of round disks at the back for air fans on a couple of them, and/or a bit of a grill for the third model.

They scale out very nicely with the figures he has along side.

The Scene has just re-released their Grav/Hover cars again as well, and they look quite nice, for a two-seat, roadster model.

Cool, thanks for that link. Traveller's one of my projects too.

I was going to recommend those Listerine strip containers, too. They make great grav-jeeps or some such.

I was going to use those Listerine strip containers as landing craft for a Battletech campaign i ran a few years ago, if i remember correctly the front of the container flips open to slide a Listerine strip out.

Really neat ideas on that link, Mako. Thanks.

You guys are welcome.

I'm looking for the parts to make a Shiv shuttle/boat, if you happen to run across the rocket model part(s) to make one of those. Looks like it is a good design for a personal spacecraft, for entering orbit, and/or dropping to a planet's surface.

Dan when you say "Hover Cars" Do you mean skimmers a'la Star Wars like Landspeeders?

And how much Bits to New construction?

I tend to use a lot of different of thicknesses of Styrene sheet and other plastics that bond well using Plastic Weld. I also have quite the collection of Plastic Rod in a variety of shapes. Add to that a collection of MSG sprues by Kotobukiya, which are details like hatches, rocket nozzles, panels and other related bits designed for detailing 1/144th to 1/100th scale Mecha.

I also us a number of Epoxy Putties, from Greenstuff to Magic Sculpt. Generally if I use putty in/on on of my most plastic vehicles it is on the inside to add mass and structural stability to the piece. Though I have been experimenting with skinning models with sheets of flat putty, with varying degrees of success.

I was hoping for ideas on how to scratch build something like the open top "mule" in Serenity, or maybe something to carry cargo, but where the driver is standing up (like the driver in the small skiff in Return of the Jedi).

Last night I found a big stack of the Slurpee Terminator Salvation bases, like the one seen here under the bike:

And here again under this cyborg:

Now I'm thinking to take one and use it for the hull and another one cut to a third and use it as the front end of the vehicle, leaving the back open for cargo or passengers. I would have to sand down all that moulded-on lettering though.

By the way, the dimensions of those black plastic bases are 38mm x 68mm x 6mm.
