I live a few miles from where the battle of Cloyd's Mountain took place so I've always had a big interest in this rather obscure battle and have read just about everything that's ever been written about the campaign surrounding it. The high school I attended has a house on the property that was shelled by Union artillery the day after Cloyd's Mountain when Union troops burned a railroad bridge over the New River that was the object of the campaign. While the battle is somewhat obscure it is famous for having two future U.S. presidents present on the field.

I was reading about some new releases from On Military Matters in the Hobby News section and noticed that they have put out a book called American Civil War Scenarios #1 Bullets and Dirt which includes a scenario for Droop Mountain. I found this rather interesting as this is a battle even more obscure than Cloyd's Mountain that took place in West Virginia not too far away from where I live. This got me wondering if anyone has ever published a scenario for Cloyd's Mountain. Anyone know of such a scenario?

I thought I had played it, years ago, but it was from BULLETS AND DIRT so must have been Droop Mountain.

Sgt. Chris Maes wrote a scenario for Cloyd's Mountain which appeared in Charge! issue #19.

Here is a link to purchase a digital copy of that magazine with the scenario in it.

It's on sale until July 16.

Thanks for the info Scott. I'll definitely have to buy some of the Charge issues. Looks like a great publication. Are they only available in PDF form?

Hi JeremyR, 26 December 2014

I'm working on a scenario for The Battle of Cloyd's Mountain for inclusion in the next Regimental Fire & Fury Scenario Book, Volume 3. I'm looking for a period map that shows the forestation on the battlefield and have been unsuccessful as of yet. If you know of such a map, please inform me of the source. Since you live in the area, local historical societies or libraries may have such a map. I checked with the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library in Fremont, OH but they didn't have a period map of the battle. Any other information that you possess that you think would be helpful to me would be greatly appreciated as well.

Best, Lowell D. Hamilton
