From the Telegraph:

"Two destroyers and three amphibious landing vessels carrying marines set sail from Russian bases in the Arctic and the Black Sea, according to Russian military sources."

Does anyone have more on these landing ships, their capacity and capabilities?

Most likely Alligator class as these are still in service:

Possibly the one remaining Rogov class as well:

The Russians have ordered French Mistral calss assault ships but these have only just been laid down.

Thanks Martin. They don't seem to have very many of these ships.

No, the Russians never really developed the same kinds of gator-freighters that the US and UK did.

Then again, the Russians also don't really need to send the 'world police' over to some pestilential Bleeped texthole on a regular basis, either, while the US and UK do/did.

They had quite a few amphib ships, but many of them have been sold off, or scrapped.

Still, they have some decent numbers compared to most other nations.

The wiki sites have info on most of the classes, how many are in service, and who owns the ones that were sold off.

I would love to have one of these amphibious landing vessels, if I had the cash :-) Lots of space for my minis collection, and plenty left for an RV or two. I could tour the world, picking up gamers at one port, playing out historical conflicts, and then dropping them off somewhere else (over the side if the game isn't going well..)

Hell, if I was really rich I could make it a small carrier. That way I could fit a few helicopters on the flight deck.
