In putting together a Scottish force I'm wondering what % of the cavalry should be lancers vrs. traditional armed cavalry. Also, did the Scots make use of Dragoons or mounted harqbussiers between 1638 and 1650? Cheers. U.K. |

Depends on the the year and the regiment. In the Bishops wars the cavalry were armed in a conventional manner with pistol, sword & carbine. Some having as many as five firearms (4 pistols & carbine). In 1644 the standard equipment was changed to two pistols and a sword and this probably reflected the reality for a majority of the troopers in earlier years as well as carbines were expensive. Lances were introduced in 1644, first by two regiments and then the practice spread to the whole army. The practice was for one squadron of each regiment to be armed with pistols while the other used lances. In 1650 the entire cavalry were orderd to arm themselves with lances. In 1644-45 there was a single regiment of dragoons serving with the army in England (Fraser's regiment) and some elusive units fighting against Montrose. Fraser's regiment was turned into poorly equipped cavalry in the later part of 1645. |
