Back in the day, we used to base figures on balsa wood and use a coloured sawdust/wood chip type stuff for ground cover. I would like to re-base or add to my nostalgia units and would like to cover the bases in a similar material. Does anybody know of a source for this old school stuff? Thanks in advance, Rob. |

You can buy bags of sawdust at most lumber yards. Some even sort it for coarseness. |

Yep, then dye it with fabric dye. |

Or even color it with acrylic paint and a bit of water (getting the right mix is a matter of practice), spread it out and let it dry. Use the cheapest acrylics you can get and you can make several colors to mix together for your very own signature blend. |

Take small bag to Lowes or Home Depot. They will give you some for free. |

Model Railways suppliers still make this – Javis? |

Not to beat a dead dog: your local cabinet maker and refinisher should have some very fine dust. I use it mixed with Durhams putty and get a cool fine texture for 15mm fields. |

Yeah, but the model railway stuff still comes in those "vibrant" shades of our youth :-) |

Wasn't that stuff made by Bachman? Came in green and dark brown if memory serves
I just used some of the old brown "earth" for a "forest" base
