In my latest blog post I look at Games Workshop and how its approach to narrative in wargaming differs from most modern Fantasy and Sci-Fi games. link |

Very interesting. Games Workshop is often berated for being a closed system in terms of it's presentation of rules, fluff and miniatures as one package, but you make a very convincing case that GW is actually more open than many similar systems. It seems that the three legs of the ability to customize your forces (both in game and in "fluff"), the richly detailed worlds in which GW games take place and yet still keeping gamers fairly tied to playing GW games with GW miniatures is a balance that has served GW well. They provide a great setting and exclusive miniatures range, but give you just enough freedom to feel that you are in control. |

Very interesting. I‘m perplexed that some games expect you to use their own defined characters. That sounds like no fun at all. |

I try to avoid games where you absolutely must play with predefined characters. I really wished Warmachine started with a "make your own warcaster" |

This mix of established universe and flexibility is the reason that I choose the Warhammer family over it's more modern competition: To me, fantasy games are all about the story to which the battle is the big action scene at the end. By being required to use the 'official' characters in every game the designers are essentially saying 'You are not allowed to tamper with OUR story.' |

Good stuff there
the other posts are interesting as well. I've pretty much avoided the 'boutique' miniature games that come with stat cards
which I see as a further attempt to lock you in to playing with the official minis. Confrontation was the closest I came and even that had its 'Dogs Of War' expansion which was pretty much open-ended with player-designed warbands fighting to gain in power. Luckily there are plenty of 'modern' alternatives like the Two Hour Wargames stuff, the Goalsystem games like Chaos In Carpathia, the variations of Song Of Blades And Heroes
and good old Warhammer (I'll take the older versions). |
