Hello again, wanted to share some pictures of the first 'disabled' kit I've tried from Langton – I didn't even know these existed before, but this one was a whole lot of fun. I've added to the damage built in to the kit by gouging some shot holes, painting broken windows, and adding severed rigging lines. Also some little bits of wood floating in the water and lying on deck. If I were someone who had a lot more time, money and energy, I bet I'd be quite taken with the idea of having a disabled version of lots of ships I already have, and I was thinking it would not be hard to take a normal kit and 'convert' it. But these disabled kits are neat, almost like simple dioramas, with a lot of room for embellishment. As usual, lots more pics over on my blog at jwhitegallery.blogspot.com Thanks! – James

Thanks guys! Monkey Hanger – those are indeed Langton's brass ratlines. - James |

Beautiful work James
as always! This is the first one of these I have seen completed from Langston. I had to do some scratch built ones made from plaster that didn't turn out so nice. I'll have to get one of these.

They look pretty convincing to me Vol! I like that the sails have shot holes and the masts are actual broken wood (from appearance at least). The hulls themselves are scratch built from plaster you say? Very cool! |

I agree, exquisite. Be a bit expensive to have one damaged ship model for each floating version, but what a concept. |

Gosh thanks guys. The masts are tooth picks I shaved down using a piece of sheet metal with different size holes I drilled. I just pushed the picks through successively smaller holes until they were shaved to the right diameter. The yards are just sticks from dried weeds and grass. The sails are cut from a napkin. I used a dental tool to carve the gun damage in the plaster hull. I missed adding ratlines, don't know why. I guess I was anxious to be done. I did a 100 gun then a 74 wth a broken back (because it broke). There are more pictures on my blog site. volsminiatures.blogspot.com I like your idea James of making a wrecked twin for every ship, but the time it would take
wow! Maybe next winter. |
