Yep, there was a whole fashion for Wheel+Track combos in the 20's and 30's, just about everyone played with them. It did lead to the Christie designs which left out the "switchable on the move" capability (and so British Cruisers, Russian BT and T34 families, only the BTs keeping the wheel capability).

The attraction being faster road speed given by wheels, maybe giving more flexible strategic movement, certainly less track wear, but switching to tracks for superior cross country work. The downsides being more mechanical complexity (so more to go wrong) and additional weight.
