Hi, I'm kinda new to the site and to 15mm(been doing various 25/28mm's for years.) The other day at a local hobby shop they had fair selection of the Old Glory 15mm ACW models. I looked at the Berdan models, but for some reason they didn't look too 'correct' to me. Perhaps it was my lack of sleep or the heat. So the question. Are the Old Glory Berdan Sharpshooters any good? Are there other companys that make 15mm Berdan Sharpshooters? I've always been a ACW buff and have no real want to start an army, just get some 15's to paint up. Also, if anyone could offer some ideas on good color matches on their uniforms, blue sack coats and the light blue pants. Perferably with Vallejo paints. Thanks! |

My Berdan's sharpshooters are left overs from the Old Glory skirmishing pack with the bayonets cut off and the rifles shortened slightly. They work just fine for me. Billy Yank |

Try AB Miniatures. The frock coat/forage cap combinations. They look great. They don't have leggings though. |

It depends on what time period you want them to be from. Early war had the full kit with frock coat, leggings and feather in their cap. And they had the special knapsack with fur on the outside and the fry pan attached to the center of it. Later war, the frock coats were packed up and they wore the standard sack coat, with possibly their green cap and pants, but no leggings. |

Mine are the old school Hinchcliffe – leggings, frock coats, the whole nine yards – used them for for years |

Yeah, for mid to late war you can use AB's sack coat/forage cap combinations. I used them to paint up Berdan's at Gettysburg like the Troiani painting. Blue sack coat with green pants and cap. Look very nice, and different. |

FireZouave makes a great point. Friekorps are smaller than Old Glory which won't be a problem as they are in a separate unit. Take a look at the Blue Moon line, they are really nice figures. AB are awesome too though the priciest of the bunch. |

Thanks for the help, everyone. I'll have to take a look at some of those lines. Again the idea is more just some to paint up, but knowing me this will just turn into an army. I do really like the look of the blue sack coat with the green pants and cap. I have always had a soft spot for the 20th Maine, so if I did start an army it would be Gettysburg period. |

Of course if you do the 20th ME at Gettysburg you can add in sharpshooters, especially with "B" Co, behind the wall on the left. |

There is some question about just how 'green' the Berdans stayed as the war went on. Keeping them supplied in the field might have been a problem, but the government did contract with an arsenal in Philadelphia to produce the green uniforms so they were available. In fact, when the Berdans mustered out in '64 there were enough in the warehouse to outfit a whole new regiment, the 203rd PA (I think) who went to war in green uniforms :) And if you are going to add the Berdans to your wargame army, what's the point in painting them blue? :) |
