I have a book source that gives Caesar 80 cohorts in 12 legions & Pompey 110 cohorts in 11 legions. My source only names a few of the legions present however. Does anyone have a full list of the (known) legions present?

Thanks all!

The figures of 80 cohorts and 110 cohorts come from Caesar himself. It is disputed, but modern writers, e.g. Philip Sabin, tend to go with Caesar. I don't know of a source that lists them all …

Not sure if you are a member of the Society of Ancients (it's the kind of question that might get an answer on the SoA Forum …)..

From your question I am supposing you are planning to wargame Pharsalus. If this would be the case, I am interested in knowing how you are planning to takkle this….

I am indeed considering it Ray. For numbers on each side going with the standard (Caesars troops) 22,000 legionairs, 1,800 cavalry, and 5,000 foot auxiliaries.

For Pompey, it looks like he had 7 cohorts guarding his camp and quite a few (# not in front of me currently) assigned to various forts. Therefore, he will have somewhat less in legionaires than the usual given 45,000!

Im also giving Pompey 5-6,000 cavalry and 4000 auxilleries.

For Pompeis auxiliaries, I have Gauls, Kappadocians, Thracians, Galatians. Syrians, Pontics, Cretans, and Gauls in Egyptian service.

For Caesars auxiliaries. I have Spanish, Gauls, Germans and Greeks.

For miniatures, Ill probably use Old Glory for the bulk and some Essex mixed in.

For rules, I havent decided but im going to pick up a copy of Polemos' SPQR.

I welcome any and all input along the journey!

For Pharsalus you can't do better than Phil Sabin's own "Lost Battles". Pharsalus is one of the scenarios in the book.

I played that sceanario a few times, and worked great with "Might of Arms" from Bob Bryant.
