Wooden Wars
With Gen Con just over the horizon, and yours truly running at least 8 games there, I have been busy painting up units and working on the rules for Wooden Wars. This installment deals with two of the four main rules systems of the game, with a little painting thrown in. So dress your lines, jauntily tip your bearskin, and read on! skullandcrown.blogspot.com Thanks for looking! Thomas Foss |

I like the simplicity of your rules. If you are referring to the same kind of small bouncy ball as we have here in UK, I'm a bit concerned thay they will go flying off in all directions after bouncing at the point of first graze if thrown and risk knocking over/damaging other items nearby – which not go down well with my wife! What about placing the ball on the floor and flicking it with a finger? |

Good stuff Thomas! Looking forward to seeing you again at GenCon next month. Herb |

Beautiful stuff but so time-consuming. Were you get all the cigar boxes for storage? |

Arthur1815 (nice moniker, BTW) We do clear for action a bit but thus far with over 70 battles under our belts, nothing has broken. Mostly we play in the patio, a bedroom and the hallway (ooh- those are bloody affairs). Remember also that we toss, not throw the ball. I do call this out in the rules. If finger flicking is your style, I say go for it! We have found that the best way to not anger the Mom is to let her play too! Herb- Can't wait to have you play! Bob- Thanks for the comment. Really you can paint them or not to your liking. I currently am doing an experiment of just one color glaze that takes about 2 minutes, and they look pretty cool. I have been collecting boxes at flea markets, local shops (who are keen on selling once they see soliders) and the ever present Ebay. Cheers Ths |

Looks like a lot of fun. I must admit to being too lazy to read your whole blog, but have you tried "painting" a figure on the computer, printing it out, and sticking it on as a facade to the blocks? Once you get one right, you can then print as many as you want instantly. That would just leave painting the edges. |

Gentlemen; Here's how I solved the cigar box question for my Old School toys: link 10 nice wood boxes, various sizes, for $19.95 USD, and in the past they have had chipboard assortments as well for half that price. I bought 20 of each a few years ago and they have been more than satisfactory. Even used a couple of the nicer ones to make Christmas projects for SWMBO. I used to have a couple of local tobacco shops holding boxes for me for $1 USD apiece until the "crafters" started offering him $5 USD and $10 USD for the nicer ones. I have also bought off eBay, but the Thompson deal was better overall. Bill Sir William the Aged |

I have been following your posts for some time, those wooden figures really are something quite special, I really like them. The paint job is very nice too, I can see I would enjoy doing something like that myself. Actually, I also like EagleFarms suggestion posted above, it would be easy to produce quality printed versions to stick onto those wooden figures would it not? I'd say that could make good commercial sense too from your sales perspective? Anyway, I admire your creativity, they are wonderful figures. Regards, Lee. |

Re printing, you would still need the basic wooden shape though, and would need to cut the printout? Remember too there are two sides to the figures. |

Are these commercially available? My five year old would love them. |

EagleFarms and Grambo- I have considered decals, or a print and paste, but as 10th foot noted these are multi part models, so (for most) you have choices and ability to convert to your heart's desire. Regard this prototype sprue for the foot officer shows.
I fear that if you are pasting down an image over the wood, then adding an arm or shako, you'd be gluing it to the paper and not directly onto the wood, which would not give the strongest adhesion point. Silk screening onto the wood was another option I looked into, but the ability to paint the uniform up any color you wanted won out. That being said, I am in talks with some of the decal folks about how they might be able to set up some decals for them's that want them. Definitely doing medals to award your soldiers Cheers Thomas Foss |

ATwiningham- Thanks for asking. I am announcing my kickstart mid August just before GenCon. I will also have a limited amount of stock for sale at GenCon itself. My children have a blast painting them up, to be sure! I'll have more updates about this as the time draws closer! Cheers Thomas Foss skullandcrown.blogspot.com |

Thanks Thomas and good luck. I won't be at Gencon, but I'll likely get in on the kickstart. My boy takes a keen interest in my "army guys" and he's just at the point where he can grasp simpler rules so it seems like the perfect fit. |

Wow this is very interesting and very cool. However, you actually launch rubber balls at hand painted and hand assembled figures? Good on you sir! I respect this on so many levels. :) |
