I immediately think of:

GM Fraser – far east
Roald Dahl – fighter ace

Plenty of US examples as well.

The best comedy came from Mitch Hedburg: YouTube link

It would seem the best comedy is the product of tragedy. It's one of the reasons I don't want to be a comic. Or, if your not funny, it's because your life hasn't sucked enough. How is this a bad thing?

I think it depends on your sense of humour. Many subjects are funny but can depend on many things.
Most people find Benny Hill funny. Not feminists or labour politicians. Some people find Minty Python funny or even slaptstick (especially children).

I wonder if it's to do with laughing in the face of tragedy.

A sort of laugh or you'd cry responce.

Most humor is based upon someone else's pain. Slapstick is funny because many of us can relate to stepping on a rake and getting slammed by the handle, falling off a curb. Hitting your head on unlikely objects.

We laugh at what hirts because we have either been there or we hide our embarrassment with laughter or it is ironcially funny to see the absurd in the midst of terror. That is hy Bill Mauldin's cartoons hit the mark so often.

Not just from those topics. Everything has a potential to induce humour – including Race (Alf Garnet), religion (Life of Brian), Finance & Banking (everyone!), alien cultures (Al Murray). Victoria Wood looks at life at large from a female perspective – possibly our most successful comedienne, and there is a whole industry based on irony, satire and current affairs (News Quiz). None of these major on death or war.

Not everyone does like slapstic or Benny Hill, and some find the agressive and obnoxious "humour" of Bernard Manning and Chubby Brown amusing.

Humour is a very personal thing, and fashions change over time and vary across cultures….

And suffering. Don't forget suffering.

Is it culturally insensitive to point out how much good comedy comes from Jewish writers?
