Assembly of the first new Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carrier for the Royal Navy has marked another milestone at Rosyth

Are we still talking 'Carriers' in the plural? I thought the lastest deal was we could only get 2 if we gave up on having any aircraft to fly off them? We only managed to get 2 hulls through 'Main Gate' back in Tony Blair's day when some staffer joked that they would be named HMS Blair and HMS Brown. Those poor deluded saps actually believed him! |

According to the article
The Aircraft Carrier Alliance (ACA), a partnering, is building the two carriers, HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales. Nobody is going to cancel a ship named for Queen Elizabeth, are they? Prince of Wales, though
Maybe should have been named after Princess Diana? |

Good point Bill! Of course, then she wouldn't be able to sail into battle, since the loss of a second Diana would be too much to bear, I think. Still, might help with fundraising for aircraft to go on it. Looks like a curved, apartment building, currently, instead of a warship. |

Naming it Diana would have made it easier to sell to France. ;-) |

Impressive sized ship, or will be when they put the back bit on. Wouldn't HMS Diana be a better name for a Minesweeper? |

I think we'll have HMS Camilla sooner. |
GarrisonMiniatures | 07 Jul 2012 2:06 a.m. PST |
Actually there have been 13 ships called HMS Diana, including a cruiser in 1895, a destroyer in 1952 that was sold to Canada, and a Daring class destroyer in the 50's that was

cancelled. |

"I think we'll have HMS Camilla sooner." Cue another bizarre sex fantasy from Charles. His tampon comment to Camilla was
timeless. As was SNL's skit. Hoser |

Looks like a curved, apartment building, currently, instead of a warship. A carrier *is* a large apartment building! |

Can anyone tell me what the box is sticking out the side? |

I know that these carriers are being built jointly by BAe and THALES as the Defence Minister of the day couldn't make up his mind about who to award the contract to. Which probably explains why I've seen a 'photo' of a completed carrier with 'BAe' painted on the front tower and 'THALES' painted on the rear tower. There might have been a hint of bodge tape wrapped round the middle holding the 2 halves together as well. All Politically Incorrect of course. Ho Hum

Yea, I was wondering about that projection as well, since it doesn't seem like it would exactly facilitate streamlined sailing. Perhaps some sort of external device for helping with the alignment of the next piece, and after that is welded on, maybe the rectangular projection gets cut off? |

It's a diving platform for the crew when she capsizes. |

Wasn't HMS Brazen named after Diana? |
Brown Fez | 11 Jul 2012 1:55 a.m. PST |
I thought HMS Mersey was the last oblique tribute by the RN to the Princess of Wales. Obviously they were thinking of the tunnel not the river. |

I'm reminded that HMS Brazen's helicopter was called Hussy

>I thought HMS Mersey was the last oblique tribute by the RN to the Princess of Wales Off topic – when I worked at Philips Semiconductors, in the Netherlands, at the time of Diana's death, a chip was produced with Waaaaaaaay more silicone than had been anticipated. They looked at the design again and found that one of the designers had put in a poem to Princess Diana. True story! |

Good story too. That goes into my "stuff to say at dinners" bag thanks Chortle. |
