Hi All, well title says it all, who was the author, Gordon, Patrick of Ruthven, History of Scots Affairs? and are his accounts of the civil war in Scotland any better than say Wishart's? cheers Chas |

A North East loon. His account is accurate as he was there at the time. He writes from a Gordon perspective and as such he is a necessary corrective to the other main accounts of the period. Wishart writes from Montrose's perspective as he was also there and his versions are culled almost directly from the letters sent to King Charles – in fact much was probably dictated to Wishart by Montrose. The third key text for the period is Spalding (History of the Trubles) who writes from the position of the citzens of Aberdeen. There are other, minor narratives such as the letter to the Pope but these three are the essential ones. |
