I recently tested three Folk Art water based stains as an alternative to the old GW Washes.

Details can be found on my Blog;

Hi Tony, thanks for the post. I will have to try these out. I did not know folk art even made stains. I have made washes from thier regular paints, but they do not flow right. Maybevdue to the pigment used?

Interesting. I will check out my usual Folk Art suppliers here in the States.

Thanks. I have a new project that these may prove very useful for.

So how do they flow like a wash when diluted with plain water?

When I first started, I just diluted paint with water. That just gave me dirty looking figures. Then I started putting a drop of detergent in the rinse water and using that to dilute the paint. But an inexpensive stain that flowed into/around details nicely when diluted with plain water would be great.

thanks

Hi Andy,

For this test I used plain tap water.

In the past I have used distilled water and/or tap water with a drop of washing-up liquid.

With just plain tap water they flowed well enough.

Which are please? Probably something, as usual, not out here on the "left coast" I imagine?

TIA…

Cheers,

I believe Hobby Lobby and Jo-Ann's may carry them. You might be able to find them at a Michael's but they seem to be clearing out a lot of their lines these days.

My local Michael's had practically NO craft paints when I went in a few weeks ago.

I bought this at AC Moore. I have yet to try.

Tried it. I thought it was a bit thick. About 50% water and it worked very well.

I just used some Walnut on a horse and it's great – I did have to thin it down a bit – dries between flat and satin.
