Okay, silly little project going on, and I am looking for two things actually….

First, I have the Eureka 15mm Mound Builders. Crackin' good figs they are, and I want some 15mm Vikings to go with (or against) them. So, not only am I looking for great Vikings, but ones that would match in heft, height, detail, and animation with the Eureka Mound Builders. Don't really need berserkers or high highfalutin types with lots of armor, but more of the day to day dress with some leader types in moderate armor. I don't need a boatload (or maybe one boatload), so cost isn't too much of an issue, but availability to the U.s. would be a requirement.

Second, I want to find a simple set of rules, skirmish scale (one figure equates to one man), that deal with a bit of detail with the various weapons found circa 1000 A.D. Spears (throwing and thrusting), bows, atlatl, axes, swords, maces, etc. I believe that different weapons do have an impact on combat, so having different modifiers or what not for the aforementioned would be ideal. Along with that, I also desire the rules to have solid morale and troop quality ratings, much like Ambush Alley/Force on Force. Does something like this exist?

The Vikings by Khurasan are quite nice, but I'm not sure how they match up with Eureka's Mound Builders.

Splintered Light Miniatures should be coming out with a Viking range shortly.

The Khurasan are a little tall while Splintered Light's other Dark Ages figures are mid-sized. I use both brands together with no problem

Skjaldborg is a nice free ruleset-very morale based.

Look through splintered light's dark ages line, there are some great figures with and without helmets armed with swords, javelins, axes, spears and bows in their saxon and pict lines.
The old Columbia games ruleset battlelust would match up with the scale and level of detail you are looking for, but might not be close enough to AA/FoF to suit your tastes.
Lately we have been using a heavily modified version of Song of Arthur, for skirmish and Battletroll can be pretty fun too, if you are looking for something out of the sagas.

again, i have no idea about the scale of these eureka figures – although I understand eureka to be more 18mm than 15mm as a general rule.

but if it helps, baueda vikings are scaled to fit in with essex, and they are also fit in with khurasan who are also scaled to fit with essex, and all fit height wise (but not proportion wise) with splintered light figures (saxons), as I have all of them in the same units in my army.

what is a mound builder anyway?

I believe they are meant to be natives of some kind, he is probably doing something along the lines of Vikings landing in Nth America where they encountered the Native Indians of that time which they refered to as Skraelings, so Dark age Native American Indians ?

Thanks for all the suggestions thus far. I came across both the Baueda and Khurasan figures last night. Both really nice! I have also seen the Splintered Light figs, and they look very well done as well. Looks like Khurasan make a couple of packs that will work best for the "not so much armor" requirement, those being Bondi/Raider/Hird/Leidang ones. Decent mix of weapon types and little armor. Baueda's pack compositions aren't quite as interesting.

I just downloaded Skjaldborg and Battletroll (I had forgotten about the latter, remember seeing it in MWAN and thought it was a fun looking game). Looks like Battlelust is still available, but really couldn't find a good deal.

As for Mound Builders, there were several groups of them, from Adena to Hopewell to Mississippian (and many in between). I am looking at the Fort Ancient to Mississippian period, maybe using Cahokia as the main source of inspiration.

Makes the period plausible for use with Vikings, even if the latter did not venture to mid-eastern North America.

I agree with you that the Mound Builders/Cahokians make great opponents for the Vikings. Though not historical(as far as we know), a meeting between the two is plausible.

Also check out Khurasan' early Woodland Indian figures. In this case a very likely enemy of the Mound Building societies, and another force to fight the Vikings.

Imagine a Mounder Builder chieftain (Sun?), hiring a band of Vikings as mercenaries against encroaching Woodland tribes from the north. The Vikings will serve in exchange for land, slaves, furs, maple syrup, or whatever valuable one can think of.
