So I have been theorizing about how to make forshield for possible human space ships. As humans travle to the planets in our solarsystem, our first problem is not making a shield to stop bombs or bullets, unless some sort of space weapons race start. But even a jurney to mars is a big risk, micry astroids, mass ejections from the sun. If a big enough ejection happens the whole crew of a mars expedition would get iradiated. So how to make a shield, we do know that the earth has a magnetic shield, simply made from metals spinnig in oposite directions inside the earth. So at first we only need a very weak electromagnetic shield to stop radiation from space and the sun, We also see that earth project the shield quite a big out from the planet it self. So what we need is a shield generator that create a weak electro magnetic shield projected a few meters of tens of meters outside the hull of the ship. But how to make a shield that stops mater, we know that if you get a powerfull enough magnetic field, all mater can be suspended, attracted of repulsed by it, we have supsended strawberies and even live frogs in this field, the problem is thats about as big as we get, the room is huge and the power is enormous, yet the center of the magnetic field is just a few inches. So we need this type of magnetic field, suspended as a shield around a ship, if it's powerfull enough, no mater or energy will pass through it. |

By all means, invent away. Such a thing would be a huge boon for space exploration, and like so many other creations for space, would have a bunch of uses here on Earth. But some issues: 1. A magnetic field will only affect particles that are either: charged, ionized (same as charged, really), or can conduct a magnetic field (ferrous-type metals). 2. To be strong enough to protect the ship, you're probably going to wind up subjecting the crew and ship to some pretty powerful fields, so you will need to protect them from the protective field. |

As I said if the magnetic field is powerfull enough all mater will be affected, becasue in the end electromagnetic force holds all molecyls togeather, so if the field is strong enough anything, will be repulsed, either enery or physical mater. Also the idea is to project the shield outside of the ship, kinda like the magnetic field is projected outside of the earth, there by not affecting the ship or crew |

You might as well simply use magic-tech like Star Wars or Trek does and have your force fields do whatever you want/need them to do, and leave science out of it – it gets in the way of most scifi gaming and fictional tropes. Sounds like a good idea. Of course, the logical answer is just to make the entire hull, or at least the front part of it, out of rare earth magnets

Ghostrunner, your point 1 is not the case: YouTube link I've actually had the good fortune to perform the similar experiment with a sheet of aluminum and a *very* strong magnet. If the field is strong enough, eddy currents occur even in non-ferrous materials. |

For a spaceship game I designed, the ships had "directional" shields (ie could put them where needed), which operated like so: Project 2 (or more) energy fields, and where they intersected, it formed a barrier to whatever was incoming. Not sure if it would work in reality, but it's an idea

Gunfreak, I wrote up something like that for my force fields. Yes, magnetic fields only affect charged particles but the fields could be tailored to hold vast amounts of these charged particles. In my SF the ions are siphoned off the engine jets. When other non-charged particles enter the field they will collide with the charged particles if there is sufficient density, especially if they are rushing about. The would at least EMP any missile guidance entering the force field if not shatter the missile. |

Ok, I am fascinated with the potential of the Higgs Boson. Develop your force field using the force of the Boson, which gives you unlimited power. With the immense power to deflect or stop any object, your device uses the energy and mass of the object to stop itself. Go to the next level, and have the force of the object be projected back at it's origin. An attack on your ship means destruction for the aggressor. |

The Strong force only hold proton and neutrons togeather in the atomic nuklei, it also holds togeather quarks. But it's the electromagnetic force that create molecyls. craate surfece tention, infact almost everything we experience except gravity is becasue of the electromagnetic force. |

A magnetic field strong enough to stop neutral particles would require a preposterous intensity, if it is even possible. At that point, you can probably fly to Mars quickly enough to avoid the solar storms. -Kle. |

The Higgs Boson doesn't really have any potential. It is the physics that we will learn from it that has potential
