I think the title says it all. I would like to paint and base some of my 15mm fantasy minis, but i haven't though about any rules yet, so i dont know what basing sistem to use, other that to use mulyi minis stands |

No standard, but there are several that use 40mm squares, including my PRIDE OF LIONS and also Chipco's FANTASY RULES! And I think one or two others. You might broaden the topic to ask which rules allow DIFFERENT basing systems. For example, PRIDE can be used with any bases as long as there is a uniform frontage. |

I find that it I mount troops on 20mm x 40mm for regular troops and 40mm x 40mm for large troops and monsters. It works well for most systems. That size means I can put two stands together to make a 40mm x 40mm like is needed for Pride of Lions or I can use them to play Mighty Armies. For Mighty Armies, I can play my forces with each other since they are all 20mm x 40mm, but if I want to play on official 25mm x 50mm and 50mm x 50mm Mighty Armies stands I have some of the larger plastic bases with magnets imbedded so they stick to my smaller metal bases and make my forces fit. I just feel 20mm x 40mm is a good compromise and works well with multiple systems, including HOTT/DBA if I want to play those or Fantasy Rules!. Just got to figure out what rules you like and what the best fit is for you. Jeff |

The standard is about 13mm smaller than whatever you decided upon. |

40mm *wide* is a common basing standard for 15mm Fantasy. The depth of the basing is much more variable. |

40mm wide works for a lot of rules
You might want to download a free copy of HOTT, it has a chart regarding the depth for different unit types in those rules. I believe these base sizes also work well for others as well

Thanks too much for your answers. I just was curious as if there was any standard basing, as it seems to exist in ancient games, were almost every modern ruleset allow gaming with armies based for dbmxx. My problem is how many miniatures to put in each stand, as this is usually based in troop type. This is not a problem with ancient armies, where everybody agrees about which troop type is a certain historical unit. But with fantasy armies, how must i base my centaurs? It seems that first i must choose if they are regular or irregular or feudal or
well sure you get the idea. |

Well, again, in PRIDE and also in FANTASY RULES and also HOTT and MIGHTY ARMIES, what you are interested in for game play is the element, the single stand. (In PRIDE three stands together form a unit.) How many minis you put on a stand is largely a matter of what you like, what looks good. PRIDE bases infantry 6 to a 40mm square if close order, 4 if loose order. Cavalry are three to a base if "heavy" and two if light. But as Jeff pointed out, you can play as well with 40mm wide and 20mm deep, for the infantry, with only a single rank of minis. I think for most fantasy battle rules the base size matters more than what's on it, as long as your opponent can tell what the unit represents. |

Base them as singles on ferrous #10 (US standard) washers. Use a magnetic sheet cut to what ever standard your opponent is using. |

I use the same WRG standard basing that I use for all my Ancients armies. Heavy infantry on on 40mm x 15mm, medium and lights on 40x20, cavalry on 40x30, and monsters and such on 40x40. Seems to work with most rules that I'm interested in. You can see some recently painted examples on my blog. Peter C Sword and Sandal Gaming Blog link |

I use HoTT basing, 40mm wide by whatever. |

I use denominations of 40mm wide frontage, so 40/80/120, I have not had to go bigger so far! Depending on the units the depth would vary from 15,30,40,80. This very much depends on the model being mounted and what it represents. I originally based mine for a home made version of Principles of War Ancients but I have now moved to Hail Caesar Fantasy, there us a Yahoo Group. All looks good and the verity is great. I am curious about Pride of lIons as well though. Have a look at my blog for some examples link

I think most people use 40mm wide basing for 15mm, but that does crowd them up quite a bit. I like to use 60mm basing, but I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority there. |
doc mcb | 04 Jul 2012 8:52 p.m. PST |
We put as many as 9 close order infantry on a 40mm square. But I can see the appeal of a larger size, and a number of our units need 60mm depth. |

I have to say that it is a topic with much debate. I have based mine for Fantasy rules as such: units, mounted, large $ small monsters, battle wagons and such are 40x40. Single cav 20x40, char like magic user, commanders, heroes 20x20. I try to put 6 inf per base, 5 bow/xboy/skirmisher per base. When I try to fit this to other systems I am all ways let not feeling happy. I would have more troops if I based them 40x20, and this would lend to better formations, bla bla bla. So it really do depend on the rules. So the true best was is base them on small washers, then create magnetic unit movement trays per the rule set. More work but you will be able to truly play any rule set. Noel |

I should clarify that I like to try and do more scenic bases, hence the 60mm frontage. If you were just doing them as close order, then 40mm frontage is perfect (and the most commonly accepted basing I dare say for 15mm figs) |

I would strongly recommend 40mm frontage and HotT compatible depth. The depth doesn't matter so much for the vast majority of games so you may as well be HotT compatible. If there is any sort of standard out there then WRG and HotT are it. |

Im basing my 15/18mm fantasy standard foot troops 4 to a base 50mm x 15mm. Only because I think it looks good. link |
