I just realised I poured the second half of my silicon RTV mold without putting any mold realise stuff on the first half. Will I be able to part the two parts ? Not sure how well the silicon will stick to itself!

you might get lucky but i wouldnt count on it.

Essentially you have encased your master in silicone. Time to break out your scalpel and cut them apart.

Unless you very lucky, steady your hand and cut out the mould carefully.

And remember not to do it again next time!

Hmmm,…Was thinking I'll have to cut it out. I was kinda thinking the least amount of time curing I leave it the better. I was thinking the adhesion will increase with time. I will get the scalpel out in the morning and see what happens.

Well I had been reading about cutting open molds to make two piece molds, so now I'll get to practice.

And yes….hopefully I won't do it again!!

If you washed the one mold half with rubbing alcohol before pouring the second half, and I am assuming that you may have place the master in clay before pouring the first half, you may get luck and be able to separate the mold halves.

Look for the parting line on the mold – sometimes it is easy to see, other times not. I will often cut a small corner of the mold near the parting line and see if the mold will separate.

Rather obviously, if the second half hasn't set up yet, pour it out now while you still can.

Some formulas of RTV silicone do not stick to their cured equivalent. The documentation on your material might say something about this. If the material has stuck to the master is a different matter.

Depending on what you intend pouring into the mold, this may not be a bad thing.

Company I do some work for makes molds in 1 piece, then cuts them open down one side only – the halves never get lost, this inside of the mold stays cleaner in storage – only thing is you have to watch your clamping pressure when casting. They also use cut off nails as alignment pins by casting them into the mold at the start.

I'm going in…wish me luck :-~

Hmmm….well the first mold was a gun barrel and the silicon was still a little soft in a couple of spots, so got a bity of stretch whilst cutting open. Not sure how well this one will turn out. When it's fullly cured I'll just have to give it a go and see.

The second mold is a naval gun carriage. The second half I had poured is the base of the carriage. I managed to cut this one a bit better. Have had to remove s few small slivers of silicon once I'd seperated the halves, so the carriage will have a slightly thicker base in parts, but will be out of sight, so I'm hoping will still be ok.
Molds are for personal use anyway, so as long as they turn out ok I'm happy!

Well, lesson learned!!

i make a lot of my moulds in one and then cut out the master.
it depends on the shape of it as to how difficult it might be.
good luck

Thanks. I've cast with them tonight and they are ok. A few more imperfections than I would have liked but useable. I lost my 'bumps' I use for keying the two halves together, but it's still possible to line the halves up.

In the words of one of this centuries greates philosophers….doh!
