I am considering a purchase of Armies of the Balkan Wars 1912-13: The priming charge for the Great War (Men-at-Arms/Osprey) by Philip Jowett. Can anyone give me some details? How good is it as a source book for all the various armies engaged in this war?

I have the World War One-Balkans Men-at-Arms book and came away sorely disappointed with information on uniforms.

I don't have the osprey book but I have another osprey-style guide published in 2005:

I have sold several copies. No complaints from my Clients.

We did the special issue on the Balkan's War back a few years ago for Time Portal Passages.

It is okay. A lot of the text is a repeat of information that you can find on the internet. Spend a couple of extra dollars and pick up "The Balkan War 1912-1913" by Alexander Vachkov.

Thanks for the recommendations. I had not heard of Vachkov's book and will consider that one as an alternative to the Osprey volume.

Being in the USa, you can take part in the Library loan program through your local library.

I have a copy for my library but one suggestion to check out is "A concise History of the Balkan Wars 1912-13". by the Hellenic (Greek) Army General Staff, Army History Directorate. I used this a primary source when I did my special issue. It is focused on greek operations.

Another place to check would be the Bulgarian militaria at the ebay store. I got a few books on the Bulgarian veiw of the war. I also got a hard book to find Squadron size book on the Bulgarian Air Force in the Balkans War and WW1.

On ebay I also got a Turkish book on uniforms of the War.
