Ive borrowed the topic name from the great old DOS game. Basically Im speaking about the period covering smokless powder, bolt-action rifles and before light automatic weapons (Leeis gun, etc…) came into use. Roughly speaking, lets say 1850-1914.

Certainly still considered a niche gaming period by most mini makers. Im hoping the popularity of the Black Powder rules will lead to some 28mm hard plastic sets eventually.

My tops would be:
Franco-Prussian,
Eastern Front 1914
First Balkan War 1912
Austro-Prussian War
And Russo-Japanese War.

One day ill pick up a book on the Russo-Turkish conflict but too many other things on my plate right now. Thanks for your input.

Well, smokeless powder didn't really start in use until 1890 or so.

But I'd have to vote Spanish-American War, and the various shenanigans in the Northwest Frontier.

Franco-Prussian for drama; War of the Pacific for pathos.

And perfect for 10mm

Yeah 1914 Eastern Front, 1866, 1877 and FPW are all good for large regular army engagements.

Thanks,

John

Crimean War – really our fist good taste of the things that would shape 20th century warfare.

If makeing Prussians for 1864, make sure you can convert them to reichstruppen. That will make them a Bestseller.

The Mahdist campaigns in Africa. not just the Sudan but the ones in the east against the Abyssinians and Italians as well have always been of great interest.

Eastern Front Great War, Balkan Wars and the Russian Revolution can also be fun.

Well, I'm surprised no one has mentioned ACW so far (given the apparent popularity of the period) as it falls within the time period.

That said, I've always been fascinated by the Austro-Prussian and Franco-Prussian Wars…

We did a series of articles on post WW1 conflicts in the Trans-Caucas and Asia Minor called 'The War that would not end.
So I have a fondness for the Greco-Turk War of the 1920s. The French in Syria and the british in the trans-caucas region are interesting too.

We also did a Special issue covering the Balkan Wars for the 'Time Portal passages' magazine a few years ago. So I really got involved in that one.

I'd have to go with the French Foreign Legion marching all over Algeria and Morrocco. Even have the 25mm figs to play it all painted up! Usually we use Sword & Flame rules.

Austro-Prussian War

Franco-Prussian War

Franco-Austrian War.

Why AP War? Because it has a number of corps on corps actions, and it is a real CHALLENGE for the Austrians!

I've wanted to visit, and possibly settle in, Copenhagen for a number of years now, so any of the Schleswig wars would be great.
