Not much of a TV watcher, but I like to watch them on DVD as 40 minutes is about the most free time I can get these days. And if they are available at the library – even better!

Anyway, even I've now heard of the "Pillars of the Earth" TV series. Is it now a DVD?

What else out there has a dark ages / medieval bent? I'd watch a fantasy series as long as it is "high fantasy" more like mythology.

Wasn't there a medieval series with Matthew Broderick and a bird? Only caught part of one episode.

Thanks in advance.

"Pillars of the Earth" came out on DVD back in 2010.
Other TV series on DVD include "Cadfael", "Arthur of the Britons", "Robin of Sherwood", "Ivanhoe" & "Merlin".
You may have been thinking of Matt Broderick in "faerie Tale Theatre", I've never seen it, so can't comment but sounds interesting.

Mathew Broderick and a bird sounds like the movie "Ladyhawke." And yes, that's available on DVD.

If you haven't seen it, the Cadfael series, with Derek Jacobi is quite enjoyable.

For high fantasy bent, Robin of Sherwood is great.

Also very good straight up medievally is the 1953 series Robin Hood with Richard Greene.

I don't know if it's available, but I enjoyed Michael Wood's "In search of the Dark Ages".

I have happy memories of "Arthur of the britons" which was on TV when I was very small.

Which probably means it was crappola of the first order !

"In the Name of the Rose" can be seen at YouTube.

In addition at YouTube, there are plenty of BBC series covering English and Scottish medieval history.

HBO's Rome was a pretty good series, only 2 seasons

I'd recommend Robin of Sherwood.

Third vote for Cadfael, I found them at the library.

I did see Rome – for a bit. I think it was the Republic, however. I finally quit when everyone who wasn't an Bleeped text was killed or became an Bleeped text. It's hard to watch a show when you dislike everyone in it except the dog.

I'm not too fond of the dog… 8^O

How about The New Adventures of Robin Hood? That was a hoot – provided you can go with the flow and just accept it.
It's a shame it's never been repeated.

not much in the "Fantasy" genre…unless Ladyhawke counts for that.

It it just a dying genre for TV series?

DontTreadOnMe04 Feb 2013 1:30 p.m. PST

The BBC made a series called The Crystal Cave in the early 90's (I think) about Merlin which was quite 'historically accurate' for the age that Arthur was supposed to have lived in. Romano-British battle scenes feature and the warlord Vortigern gets a look in. It used to be available on VHS – I'm not certain that it made the jump to DVD.

The sequel to Pillars of The Earth is quite good.
