I think the materials will depend on what's available in that locale. Could be forests. Could be containers. Could be a spaceship wreckage and scrap metal (as seen in the first few minutes of the film "Serenity"). Could be mud holes (like the mudders at "Jaynestown"). The style, I think, will probably be a mix of elements from the various cultures the settlers came from. The Alliance flag design makes me think that the two main cultures are Chinese and US:
In Alliance proper, it is a modern (futuristic) version of the merging of those two cultures. The merge is so complete that you hear Mandarin spoken without a single Chinese person around most of the time. In the outer planets, I think you would see a more frontier version of those very same two cultures, drawing inspiration and values from their past instead of the future. The outer planets would probably contain most of the people from the other minor cultural groups that made it out of Earth, looking to seek their fortune in the frontier. So, to me, an outer planet town could have a Shanghai meets Old West* look but, as I mentioned about, using whatever materials are at hand. Thoughts? Dan * A literal "Shanghai Noon"? |

I don't buy the old Western look, no matter whether the buildings are primitive huts, prefabs, "dongers", wooden, mud brick or adobe, assuming they do find suitable materials on the planet the buildings should be evolved from older methods of design and construction, not direct copies. The old Western look in Firefly is there for a reason and that reason isn't to give us a reasonable prediction of the future. In one settlement it's really so the richest, most powerful man can keep the populace under the heel of his jackboot, leaving him as the one with the hovercar and energy weapon and every one else is in the 19th century (by his own hand, obviously.) |

The Colony, in the 2012 remake of "Total Recall" seems to reflect a little Firefly-ish east/west mix, wouldn't you say?

Hmm. We're there any small urban living units in Bladerunner? Or was everything just one mega skyscraper after another? Dan TMP link |

Without knowing how much you're willing to pay. I'd suggest looking through the following: Blue moon miniatures ranges for some building variations – futuristic, Chicago gangster era 'modern', and victorian esque mansions etc. GZG for Shanty styles. No really sure for futuristic Asiatic though. HO scale for boxes/ shipping container, or Khurasan or GZG. |

I wonder if the Joss Whedon flag and military insignia for the Alliance (Union of Allied Planets) in Firefly/Serenity, and the Sino-American cultural and linguistic blending in the Core Planets, was the result of a Chinese invasion of the US long before humans used up Earth:

I like the last bit of the vedio, the buildings up against the wall, kind of like and east meets west mining town in a old mining pit. That would be kind of cool to make something like that, the locals call the town "The Pit" Hummm? |
War Monkey | 08 Aug 2014 8:50 a.m. PST |
Had some time to sleep on it and looking back at some of the photos again, would be difficult to really do a pit mine, but one could make a multi level plateau, with path ways working their way up and buildings along the way, with the wealthy living at the top and the lower cast living around the bottom, and all the others being in between. Could even have a double plateau and hav gangways or bridges between the two. |
