What is your favorite ironclad naval vessel from history? |
| 21eRegt | 27 Jun 2012 9:45 a.m. PST |
CSS Virginia, aka. Merrimack. With the CSS Albemarle a close second. |
Terrement | 27 Jun 2012 9:59 a.m. PST |
"Favorite Ironclad" alibi "
favorite ironclad naval vessel from history?" USS Monitor |
Dom Skelton | 27 Jun 2012 9:59 a.m. PST |
Probably Warrior if I'm being honest, but I'll say HMVS Cerberus as I'm rooting for her
. ;-) |
Texas Jack | 27 Jun 2012 10:05 a.m. PST |
Any ironclad with "CSS" in front of it. |

Any US or CS ironclad. No other time saw such an explosion of creativity, design innovation, and just plain weirdness in naval warfare. That said, the blockade runners had the sweetest lines. Dave link |

I like the City class. Just neat looking ships. |
ageofglory | 27 Jun 2012 11:01 a.m. PST |
Another vote for the City Class. Tough to find an ACW Ironclad that isn't cool. |

Monitor! So revolutionary! |

All of them also. I even like tinclads and cottonclads. So with Abraham Lincoln fighting vampires now-would there be
.zombieclads? I prefer sidewheelers also |

Timely, as I'm trying to figure out what to get as a first order for the ACW. I think the Virginia and Arkansas look the most menacing, but don't know if I otherwise have a favourite. |

CSS Palmetto State – Defender of Charleston. link Link has major Confederate Ironclads listed at the bottom. |

CSS Virginia. What an amazing "conversion" job. But the USS Monitor takes points as well for being so radical in design— a rotating turret, a low profile hull, etc. Too bad she wasn't more seaworthy. |
McKinstry | 27 Jun 2012 2:27 p.m. PST |
HMS Warrior – her armor scheme was actually superior to later models and she could run rings around her contemporaries. |
The G Dog | 27 Jun 2012 2:32 p.m. PST |
USS Benton. Not bad for a conversion job. |
| The Beast Rabban | 27 Jun 2012 2:34 p.m. PST |
Tennessee. Took a lot to finally bring her down. Darn you, Critical Hits Chart! |
| Cmde Perry | 27 Jun 2012 3:43 p.m. PST |
CSS Neuse – if for no other reason than that I have visited the display of its hull in Kinston, SC, and a reconstruction of it nearby (the CSS Neuse II). Of course I then had to acquire a model for gaming (Thoroughbred), and am happy to say that it has proven to be a spunky little combatant, along the lines of "..it's the size of the fight in the dog." |
Rrobbyrobot | 27 Jun 2012 4:35 p.m. PST |
CSS Virginia. But they are all interesting. |
| Rich Trevino | 27 Jun 2012 5:02 p.m. PST |
The one with the "built in dads garage" aspect, C.S.S. Albemarle. It was always my ship of choice when we played "Ironclads," so long as I didn't mind losing. Below is the 63 ft working replica on the Roanoke River:

Hey, come on folks, it simply HAS to be the Manassas like the guy who stays crunchy even in milk (Paul) just said above. I mean it looks like a creation straight out of a 1950s B sci fi flick! The silver bullet guy to the right is my friend's Thoroughbred model (Toby's Virginia is blurry behind it, in the background).

How late are we applying the term ironclad? In any case, I've always been fond of HMS Captain, fatally flawed though she was. |

boy wundyr x | 29 Jun 2012 7:56 a.m. PST |
Just read a brief history of the Huascar and it's a new favourite. Seems to have seen more action than most other ironclads, and that it's still around is impressive. |

USS Choctaw. Absolutely of no use in a wargame, but it has the looks. Oh, and rubber armour! |
| optional field | 30 Jun 2012 9:19 a.m. PST |
deephorse, tell us more about the Choctaw? I've heard of cottonclads, but never rubber armour. |
deephorse | 30 Jun 2012 3:36 p.m. PST |
Hi optional field. It wasn't solely rubber armour! I'm not with my books at the moment, but from memory the Choctaw's 1" plate armour was laid on 1" of natural rubber in order to try and absorb some of the shock of shot hitting her structure. It was a failure because the rubber rotted away. However the ship herself survived being stuck many times, and saw out the Civil War. |

USS New Ironsides Another vote for this bad boy. |

USS Monadnock. A double dose of 15" Dahlgren loving, always served me well sinking the Confederacy ships. |
