I am thinking of placing an order with Shapeways, but I am confused on the materials…

Frosted Ultra Detail
Frosted Detail
White Detail
White Strong and Flexible
and all the metals…

What is the difference between the materials? (yea yea yea… I know the difference in the metals… wink )
Which is the best for gaming?
Thanks!

If you want to paint it rD, go for Frosted Ultra Detail. Nothing else is worth the effort. The sintering lines on the metals stand out a little more than the plastics, so the lines will pick up a drybrush more agressively. White detail and below are very grainey in texture.

Even with Frosted Ultra Detail, you'll probably pick up a few sintering lines, but they can be smoothed down or painted over depending on how obtrusive they are.

I go for FUD for pretty things like 1/600 and 1/300 aircraft, but am ok with WSF for spaceships and land ironclads. A really good coat of spray paint as primer helps with WSF.

FUD is closest to resin-like in texture, WSF has a texture to it, as Jeff mentioned. The difference in price right now though means I'll always at least think about WSF as an option.

Here's a couple pics of some WSF land ironclads, painted up:

Weird. I wrote a response, previewed it, then went back to edit it and the whole thing changed to some rambling about Battletech!
