Do you enjoy making your own terrain or do you all just buy preconstructed pieces? Just curious as to what others enjoy. |
Flashman14 | 27 Jun 2012 6:05 a.m. PST |
Mix, what's affordable and available I buy. The rest I make myself if I can. My preference would be to buy affordable pieces but market says no. |
| GR C17 | 27 Jun 2012 6:07 a.m. PST |
Depends. If it's small and simple, say barb wire stands, I'll do my own. More complex, say a house, I'll most likely buy. Cost of puchase vs. cost to build from scatch is also a factor. I must say I'm always saying "why didn't I think of that" when I see some of the scatch built stuff here. |

Buy if someone has what I want, otherwise build |

I buy if it's cheap and/or hard to make, DIY if it's easy or if what I want is not available. I can enjoy the process of making a custom piece of terrain, especially one that is unique and purpose-built like my Blood Bowl dugouts.
but cleaning up afterwards is a real chore. I lack a workshop or power-tools so anything heavy-duty like sawing hardboard is out of the question. For bigger items that are more "stock" items I would rather buy, like the Amera ruined tower and these very nice prepainted resin buildings from ebay.
Stuff like rivers and trees are just too major an undertaking for me to undertake, so I would put down some money especially since they get used often. |

When I can, I buy. My modelling skills are not up to the level of terrain I aspire to own. |

He who makes the best terrain wins. |
| zombieu | 27 Jun 2012 6:45 a.m. PST |
For me the fun part of gaming is building the terrain. However, there are times when I buy terrain if its a good price. In fact the best corn field terrain came from a local vender in Jacksonville Florida. |

Nearly always build – It is one of my most enjoyable parts of the hobby. Tony |

I've built my own table and it looks very nice, but I dont have the skill needed to make quality looking buildings etc. So rivers, buildings, rocky hills etc are bought whilst the land and a few smaller bits like hedges or a small woods I'll build up. |

I use downloaded patterns printed on cardstock. So I buy the pdfs then build it myself |
| richarDISNEY | 27 Jun 2012 7:22 a.m. PST |
I really only buy terrain from Grand Manner anymore. Rest, I try to do myself.

I tend to make my own buildings as I like a uniform look but will buy the add ons, wells, fences, trees |
| jameshammyhamilton | 27 Jun 2012 8:01 a.m. PST |
So far I have bought my buildings, bought my trees whole or as kits and made everything else. I resent paying for stuff I can do easily myself so as a result I don't have that much terrain because I struggle to get the motivation to build terrain :? |
| Troll Hammer | 27 Jun 2012 8:02 a.m. PST |
Thanks! I wasn't expecting so many responses, I want to get into the business of making terrain and am currently on the fence about making pre-fab pieces (more expensive) or fully customizable (affordable) and reusable DIY kits

| corporalpat | 27 Jun 2012 9:48 a.m. PST |
Build mostly, but will buy something if the price is right. |
| 53Punisher | 27 Jun 2012 9:50 a.m. PST |
Both, but scratchbuilding takes easily 90% of it. |
| bracken | 27 Jun 2012 9:58 a.m. PST |
Build my own! There is nothing more satisfying then finishing a scratchbuilt piece of terrain/building and thinking that when you started it was a pile of cardboard, balsa wood, and alittle time and patience, and a lot of PVA adhesive, link take a look at the main page and the sub album ACW buildings. I even surprise myself sometimes with what you can achieve! |
| jerardad | 27 Jun 2012 10:05 a.m. PST |
I mostly build my own because I am cheap and really enjoy doing it. |
| Mick in Switzerland | 27 Jun 2012 10:31 a.m. PST |
I build my own from wood or sometimes buy plastic kits. Recently I have bought Warlord's ruined village and some Ainsty resin dungeon staircases. I also have bought GW Osgiliath Ruins and three GW hills in the past year or two. |
Parzival | 27 Jun 2012 10:48 a.m. PST |
Buy, mostly. I have a couple of build projects I intend to pursue. I also like paper terrain, which work well for my 10mm scale, where you don't really need the texture. |

| boy wundyr x | 27 Jun 2012 12:42 p.m. PST |
Both, plus use purchased paper terrain. I don't have a hard and fast rule as to what I'll build and what I'll buy though, as much as that might make life easier. |
| Oddball | 27 Jun 2012 12:47 p.m. PST |
Both. Some terrain I make myself, others I buy painted or unpainted. |

| Elenderil | 29 Jun 2012 11:49 a.m. PST |
I build rivers, roads, hills etc but tend to buy buildings. This may be easier as I am primarily working in 6mm and 2mm. In micro scales you can do good things with cardboard and milliput. |

I think its too late laptot, have a laydown in a darkened room! It won't help but I don't think anything else Will either, once you got the bug for building you've had it! The only thing that limits what you can achieve is your own imagination, I've moved on to bigger projects I'm now building a fortress, I'm hoping it will be at home with pirates napoleonics, and at a push fantasy! I know there is no hope left for me, its in my blood and in my head! I'm pretty sure if you cut me I'd bleed pva! |
