By 'regulation' the cloth patch was red with a white cross. Sincerely, K |

That is indeed the pattern for the grenadier-style, tall bearskin caps worn by carabiniers in some regiments. The lower, hussar-style busby or "colback" appears to have had a red bag ("flamme") with white lace along the seams: link |

Actually, it's not a busby. It might be called a "bearskin" or a "fur cap." The busby was the shorter version with a cloth bag hanging off one side. |

The bearskin was worn by line grenadiers, the Imperial Guard (grenadiers, mounted and foot; foot artillery, and elite gendarmes), and light infantry carabiniers as well as the two mounted carabinier regiments until 1810. The colback or busby was worn by the elite companies of hussars and chasseurs a cheval, the chasseurs a cheval of the Imperial Guard, and some of the voltigeur companies of the light infantry regiments. It was also worn by heads of column, as were bearskins (sapeurs, drum majors, musicians, etc). Sincerely, K |

Some light infantry carabiniers were issued colpacks (or busbies) in certain regiments. Elting has a plate by Knoetel depicting a French light infantry carabinier private of the 7th Legere in colpack in his volume 1 of uniforms of the Napoleonic wars. The top-bag on the colpack is red. I have this regiment painted up myself, and wanted it in my collection simply because I thought it was cool to have at least one regiment of carabiniers in Colpack:) |
