I have posted an article from Wargamer's Newsletter #196 of July 1978 by David A Weseley on the Place of Fantasy in Wargaming

on Vintage Wargaming.

Interesting. Quite prophetic. Although I would add that by '78 fantasy wargaming was pretty prevalent in the USA. Der Kriegspielrs and Hinchcliffe were both widely available in the USA. Heritage Models started in 78 and by then until 80 they had the Star Trek, John Carter, Dungeon Dwellers and Lord of the Rings ranges which were first rate castings for the time. So, the writing was on the wall in 78 that Fantasy and Scifi gaming would become a force.

Thanks,

John

That was a very interesting article. I started gaming fantasy with "Melee" by Metagaming in '74 and earned some degree of scorn from the military boardgamers that I knew. It is very intriguing to see history from that perspective.

Didn't Melee come out in '75?

Melee came out in 1977 according to Boardgame Geek, which is when I remember seeing it. It was the third Metagaming Microgame, after Ogre and Chitin I.

Melee was definitely '77. Got my first edition copy sitting in front of me.

Love the article, VW.

Well it would be nice to actually read that article.

But at the moment that is not possible in the form that it is in.

Oh I can make out bits & pieces of it but even that takes far to much time.

Have you tried zooming out to 150% to read on screen if you can't do so at 100%? Or printing it out – I just have and it is perfectly legible.

Ah, that worked after I downloaded it to my desktop.

Yes he was true about fore telling the future.

He just did not see the Dark Empire (GW) forming a few short years after this.

But he was wrong about Fantasy and Sci-fi not being Wargaming.

Though he was right about these gamers being Freaks.
