I know one would roll a dice, but how would it translate into a skill rating??? does like a 5/6=Veteran, or would that be the other way around??? |

There is a table, you roll a dice and cross reference it to the troop quality. Some troops are better on average than others. |

Also vastly depends on whether your allied or axis Italians. RSI Italians for late war get atrocious skill levels, whereas the allied Liberation Corps get very good stats. |

which is quite wrong and not well reserached if so
the so called and supposed to be "Allied Liberation Corps" was not trusted by the US/GB HQ Italy, was first used only as a labour corps and, in the majority of cases, was an Ally way to enroll, give uniforms, weapons ecc..to "supposed to be" last minute partisans that otherwise would have formed armed bands totally out of Allied control and possible insurgent cannon fodder for future Comintern insurrectional plans (see Greece after the War) .It should be noted however, that a few "Allied Liberation Corps" units fought bravely vs the Germans as the Nembo paratroops in their last succsful airborne attack vs German defended positions in the North of Italy and the motivated San Marco Marines of the Royal Navy. Totally unfair to give bad rating to RSI troops as it's sufficient to carry on a good research on the battle histories of: the XMas, Folgore and Italian SS at Anzio , the succesful battle of Castel di Decima carried out by Folgore vs British armoured troops as the last defense before Rome, the Xmas at the battle of Tarnova vs Tito's "regular" partisans on the Eastern Border and the Alpini, Bersaglieri and San Marco division participation in the last succesful Axis offensive in the West vs US troops in the Gothic Line (Garfagnana)..the last small tank skirmish in Italy was carried out by GNR RSI tanks wiche halted a US probing attack towards vital bridges and oil fields at Piacenza.. Maybe, and obviously, the political/police formations of RSI like Black Brigades, some GNR units and the Muti Legions did'nt deserve good ratings being composed of unmotivated, some time criminal elements employed in the sad work of antipartisan/civil war operations. |

Well, the Paratroopers are all Fearless Veterans, but the rest of the troops are rather variable. I like the random quality, it adds a little fog of war. I just wish there was a campaign rule allowing me to improve my troops! |

In my experience as a British 8th Army player, the Italians almost always roll well. "Confident Conscripts" are almost always troops that don't really matter. I would like to see a lot more "armies" roll for randon skill/motivation, and would start with the Americans in North Africa. Maybe the 106th Infantry Division at the Bulge also. Even my Commie Horde™ would be interesting. In fact, I would not roll for this until it became necessary to know what you had. Why should you know at deployment? Find out the hard way that your troops take hist like Conscripts, and that they are not all that Fearless either. I KNOW that this will irritate those players, particularly tournament players, who insist on total control of their armies. Thosewho disagree with me over the fact that they are a mere Company Commander, and do not really have a Fairy Godmother as Division or Corps quartermaster. |

I like the random element to it as well, the problem I have is that I would want to field RSI troops otherwise Im all Deutsch for Cassino at least. But unless I field Paracadutisti chances are I'm gonna get annihilated, I dont see how reluctant trained troops are gonna hold off against yanks with about 500 machine guns who are all fearless vets. As an example: Alpini (Menterosa) 1,2 = Reluctant Trained 3 = Reluctant Veteran 4 = Confidant Trained 5 = Confident Veteran 6 = Fearless Trained So thats a 50% chance of being Reluctant and a 66% chance of being trained. Liberation Corps Alpini 1,2 = Confident Trained 3,4,5 = Confident Veteran 6 = Fearless Veteran Somewhat unfair? Bearing in mind Allied troops get 8 bases of Rifle/MG vs Axis 6 bases Rifle/MG of much inferior quality. Having read Folgores post, if anything I'd swap the Allied and Axis 8 million charts over. |

FOW is the only rules set that I've seen that gives the Italians a decent chance to win on the tabletop. I don't know how historically accurate this is, but my Italians sure like it! |

I like the random morale, adds a little flavour to my Italians. And I can always rely on my fearless veterans (often with that unknown hero leading them) to run away why my reluctant conscripts will hold on to the objective till then end of the game!! |

In fact, I would not roll for [Troop Quality] until it became necessary to know what you had. Why should you know at deployment? Well, because your better troops can disperse further. Unless that has been changed in v3. |
