Hello All,

I'm looking for a recommendation on a grand tactical rules set where regiments are represented by 1 or 2 stands. Alternately, where a stand equals 100 men.

I don't mind a more simple game at that level. I have JR2 and 3, but don't know enough about the basing options for Regimental F&F, Black Powder, They Couldn't Hit An Elephant, or Guns of Gettysburg.

I am not interested in brigade level games.

Thanks!

The scale for elephant is 1 base = 100 men for infantry on a 1 x 1 inch square.

Join the yahoo group or check out Fat wally's website and you can see a couple of scenario with orbat and that should give you an idea if they would fit your scale/interests.

Take a look here: basing and summaries of all many major ACW rule sets.

Most rules sets would be easy enough to adapt to your basing with a little math or by using a roster…

Hmm …

Rank & File works with a sliding troop scale: the examples given for the ACW are in fact 1:50 per infantry stand (1:2 per gun stand), or 1:100 (and 1:4) – although I think it's assumed that would be for brigade level units. The system is simple but sound, with key morale checks based on stand loss and reaching 50% strength. I could see units of 4 stands working better than two … otherwise one stand loss would reduce the unit to 50% and inflict some pretty severe morale penalties. Still, at 1:100 you would rarely have units of less than 3-4 stands.

You could tweak the scale of Regimental F&F (from the default 1:40), but I think it would cause problems – the Fresh/Worn/Spent modifiers are key to the game and are based on about a 6-12 stand range being the norm.

Cheers,

Christopher

A Union So Tested has 1 stand=1 regiment. Players can run a division no problem. A Corps with a bit of practice, though it can take a while.

Larger regiments can be multiple stands. So a Union So Tested fits the bill perfectly.

I think DBACW is roughly one stand per regiment, since it used brigades of 3 to 5 elements. It's an unofficial supplement to regular DBA, available here: dbnwargaming.co.uk

Yes, but you really need the DBN rules (which are great) to play DBACW.

You can always play Volley and Bayonet at the Regimental level (1 stands represents a Regiment). We did that for many years and it worked out great. Brigade commanders take the role of Division Commanders and Division that of Corps. A little more of a tactical feel to it.

You could easily do Field of Battle at two stands to the regiment.

Thanks,

Here is the website for "A Union So Tested":

As has been said, it is designed for one or two bases to equal a regiment, so no modifications would be necessary to suit your needs.

Volley and Bayonet has a wing scale or battalion scale (don't remember what they call it) addendum on the web in which two stands equals a regiment.

Perhaps these? (the American Civil War equivalent of DBN)

dbnwargaming.co.uk

Both this game and DBN have a very flexible figure scale. I would imagine that two stands per regiment would work well.

Yikes! Look under "Other KISR rules" in the left-hand column.

Scale is about 1 figure = 25 men, but regiments are supposed to be only 1 stand each – different sized bases for bigger regiments.

It has a somewhat different movement & combat systems too.

Thank you everyone for the responses. Good info to think about.

Rally Around the Flag uses 3-6 stands per regiment.

Elephant has two scales – one where a stand = 100 infantry and basic unit is a regiment, and another where the stand = 200 and the basic unit is a brigade. Don't know if that's what you are after.

Whoops, up top you say no brigade level games. Sorry.
