I'm new to this period, and wonder whether there is anything approaching a convention for basing 28mm figures for this theatre, please? Do people base singly, or on multibases like the plastic Perry Napoleonic bases?

Thanks,

Simon

Entirely depends on the rules. If you using, for example TSATF, then base singly. If you are using say Black Powder then multi-based.

Also, small individual bases on a magnetic 'sabot' seem to work wonders. That's what I'm planning on for my 15mm shenanigans in Baluchistan.

Stupid thing I wrote a long detailed post and the bug hit it sorry.

LOL, Timmo. A summary, perhaps? :-)

So as a better question "what rulesets are used?"

I'm familiar with TSATF and have played Black Powder.

Cheers, Simon

If you base singly, the big advantages are:

1) You can play any rules set without needing to rebase.

2) No rosters to track casualties.

3) All kinds of formation flexibilities.

Good luck,
Bill

OK second go.

Rules
Battles for Empire (don't have but big battle set) base in stand not sure on convention used but have seen British in three in single rank. Can play historical actions with these
Gilder used Modified Pony Wars
TSATF large skirmish – single figure basing
Sudan Patrols – large skirmish based in threes on 30mm square for 15mm. Good game but is quite gamey. Not sure how practical it is with 28mm

I play TooFatLardies They don't like it up em. Can be large skirmish to big battle depending on how you wish to define your units.

Basing in rules is: all foot up to four figures on a base. I can't remember what was specified as I decided not to use it after play testing. British often fight in squares since the rules reward historical tactics and the face of a square can get pushed in. This is a pain using double ranked figures unless your square has long frontage to each face. In 28mm my table isn't big enough. I tested out and went for:

British:
Foot 3 figures on 45mm x 25mm (4 bases to a unit – can represent a company in small action or regiment in large battle or anywhere in between)
Horse 2 figures on 50mm x 50mm
Guns 45mm x 45mm gun angled over one corner so looks fine in line but also good in square.
Skirmishers on round singles
Mounted officers 25mm x 45mm

Mahdists
Foot 2, 3, 4 or even 5 figures on 45mm x 40mm (extra depth helps make loose arrangements)
Rifles 2 figures on 45mm frontage
Horse as British
Camels 2 figures on 60mm square
Command 50mm rounds 1 mounted with two foot
Guns 45mm x 70mm

The rules state you can use any basing convention as long as it is roughly:
Foot bases all worth 4 points and Brits and mahdists have same frontage (this is where giving Mahdists extra depth helps get more figures on the base and adds to their sense of mass whilst the Brits are a thin line).

3 mounted bases have approx the frontage of 4 foot bases.

A belated thanks to Timmo and Bill- that is very useful, I shall bear that in mind.

I have been thinking about using the Perry plastic 45mm bases (I am addicted to elements), that would tie in rather well with Timmo's approach.

Cheers, Simon
