This wasn't even on my radar screen until a promo popped up during a show my son was watching. Heck, I hadn't even known that Oliver Queen had been a character on Smallville.

Being a Robin Hood fan as a young boy, Green Arrow was always one of my favorite heroes, despite the cheesy trick arrows. I also liked the "purest" revamp in the late '80s-'90s, with reservations as to some of the gratuitous bits in that series. So I will at least check this out.

PS: No offense to The Avengers, but I always thought Hawkeye was a cheap rip-off of GA, and he didn't even have a decent costume (and I am referring to the original comics, not the current movie).

That's half good – why do they all have to be "kid heroes" ? I liked adult Green Arrow.

I do understand it's all about demographics and advertising, still….it'd be nice to see a role model that wasn't a child.

I'd rather a kid Green Arrow as a roll model than a sparkly vampire.

I'd only watch to check out his babe, Black Canary.

Obviously, I meant "purist," above, not "purest."

When did he start wearing a hood? Last I saw (back in '71 or 72) he was still wearing a domino mask…

I think in the 80s he wore the hood and the domino mask.

I realize the term "kid" is subjective based on you poster's age, but I'm pretty sure the character is supposed to be in his mid-20s and not in high school.

I'll check it out.

In 1987, DC made Green Arrow into a "mature themed" comic with a graphic novel format, starting with a series called "The Longbow Hunters." Green Arrow abandons his trick ammo and "superhero" Robin Hood costume for a traditional Wlesh longbow and broadhead arrows and a more "medieval" tunic and hooded cloak ensemble. The character also became darker and more violent, even killing criminals outright. He and his girlfriend Black Canary move to Seattle (! Apparently, his bowstrings aren't too hampered by the rainy weather) and set up a flower shop named "Sherwood Florist," complete with medieval style stone tower attached. The story line also establishes that his identity is more or less public knowledge, so the mask becomes pointless.
This, by the way, is what passed for "more realistic" in those days.

Yep, Mike Grell's take was certainly grittier than the early 80's GA was if not necessarily so much more believable. The Longbow Hunters for example has Black Canary (who abandoned a costume entirely IIRC) beaten, tortured and at least presumably raped for example, and when Queen comes to the rescue he starts the attack by shooting the main torturer guy through the throat so he chokes in his own blood – in close up.

I suppose they could do that level of "gritty" on HBO. And while that isn't automatically preferable to a more light hearted masked crime fighter fare, this particular series looks like something to give a wide berth to, unless you want to risk being brainwrecked to the point of needing to study your long-sleeved pyjamas wearing skills.

To be clear, this series isn't on HBO, it's on CW. So clearly they're not going as graphic and gratuitous as Grell (thank the heavens). Right now it looks like standard "more realistic" superhero fare. Action sequences look good, acting doesn't look bad (at least from the clip), so it's going to come down to the writing. Which, in truth, it always does, despite what studio executives all too often seem to think. Really can't judge that from a clip put together by the studio marketing department (who also all too often share the same blind spots as the studio execs).

Like I said, I'll give it a shot. (No pun intended.)

Rather my point.

Make no mistake, I'll prolly watch one or two episodes of this if it ever comes to Finland but form what I've heard and seen so far it frankly looks like complete pap to me.
