When the series first started on HBO last year, I was so intirgued that I read ALL the books, very quickly, and skimming. Now that Season 2 (or Book 2) are over, I am re-reading them at leisure, and paying a it more attention to details. I still find that the most BORING arc is Danaerys and her dragons. While she looks fine nude on TV, her arc is still BORING. There are just far too many unpronounceable names and exotic locales. who cares? I don't. As I remember, it just gets worse. Perhaps the best lesson I can take from Book 3 is
"Don't get married". There were 4 weddings in "A Flurry of Sharp Pointy Things", and none came out well. Some are worse than others, and what surprised me the most was that the one that will break the hearts the most of next season's TV was only halfway through the book. Book 4 will have a LOT of whining, mopstly from Sam. Gosh, I hated those chapters. Maybe I will skip them this time. Maybe I am a heartless SOB, but I really like Stannis. Firm but just. |

It would be really nice if someone came out with an abridged version that removed all the excessive food descriptions & cut the series down by a whole book. |

Perhaps I should think of such as similar to "Rosy fingered dawn" or "fleet footed Achilles". The Poet is stopping to catch his breath or try to remember what comes next. |

Is Dawn one of the other working girls? |

She's Ros' roommate at Baelish's. |

Thank god the chapters are POV. I usually read first the chapters of the characters I like and then move to the rest. Weirdly enough it does not break the narrative. In the latest book I read the jon, theon, tyrion, and then moved to dany. To be frank I do not find her chpaters that boring .I find the Bran chapters boring. To death. Only in the end do they actually become interesting. |

Yes, the Danaerys chapters get boring very quickly especially after the dragons arrive and the names sound like they‘re from a 13 year old‘s D&D campaign. The fourth book and the TV series really killed it for me, Ifound I really don‘t care about any of it any longer. Even true fanboys seem to dislike book 5 if the Amazon reviews are anything to go by. Whatever. I‘m over GoT. It‘s gotten very indulgent. I prefer concise writers. |

I don't enjoy Dsny's story on the show but I like her in the books especially the third one. I'm waiting on 4 and 5 at the moment so don't know if it deteriorates then. |

I gave up on the series when the next book started introducing a whole new set a characters (4?) and don't really intend to try again until the series is finished. |

Maybe I am a heartless SOB, but I really like Stannis. Firm but just. I don't disagree. One of my faves. Maybe I'm biased but I thought the show painted him a little more cold and ruthless – villainous even – than the books. Not that it'd be difficult to do that, though. Hopefully next season shows what he gets up to next, and in a better light. And yeah, Danaerys is pretty dull until what Cardinal Hawkwood said. But at least the voices in your head are better actors than Emilia 'wooden as two short planks' Clarke. ----- Warren B. |

"Rosy fingered dawn" – sounds more like 50 Shades of Grey! |

robotic eunuchs? Aren't robots essentially eunuchs by default? Except in some bizarre Manga comics (Hentai?) |

Readers should keep in mind that Ice and Fire is an immersion experience, you live, eat, fight, travel and yes die in a 14th centuary world essentially at the elbow of a POV character. You smell, taste and touch what they smell, feel, touch in a very direct manner. Martin's role playing experience should come as not suprise. I've always liked both the Bran and Danny chapters as they more resemble the Joeph Campbell hero quest aspect of fantasy tieing character growth to physical movement. That said I too have a soft spot for Stannis who is after all the rightful heir and tries to do the right thing (in a rigid way admittdaly). Employing black magic (ironiclly through the Lord of Light) for "good" ends, shows Martin's power to turn fantasy convention on its head. I'e built his army for Hordes of the Things and use it often. I'm very much rooting for him in the "snow battle" brewing up for Winds of Winter (wish Martin had been able to stick to his original plan and include the Snow and Sun battles as the climatic chapters of Dance..).
