Friends:

I've been looking around for some time for a good illustrated book depicting modern (say 1980 or 1990 to present) fighters with their markings. I'd like it if it included the rationales for each pattern and colors, and any markings. Bombers and recon, etc. are also welcome, but not as important to me.

I'd prefer a book that shows not only American planes, but will take it also :)

Please, share your book knowledge!

Not a book, but the Wings Palette site is probably more comprehensive than a book could be, at least in terms of illustrations. I don't think there's much on rationales, although some of the illustrations do talk about that.

This link is to the Cold War fighters list, but there's also post-Cold War moderns too.

Yeah, it's nice to have a book to study, but Wings Palette is definitely worth all the books you could ever buy.

Yes, Wings Palette is a wonderful resource.

I agree about Wings Palette, and have used it many times :)

I just wanted, like Sundance says, a good book on the theme. With consistent color and contrast and quality throughout. I'd pay close to $100 USD for a nice, encyclopedic book.

Try USAF Colors and Markings in the 1990s by Bell
Lots of schemes and help for a wide variety of USAF aircraft.

There were a swag of books with colour profiles etc published during the 1980s…

Titles like World Air Power and such.

Have a trawl through the second hand bookshops.

There is a plethora of book to fit you question. A basic book that I picked up the 80's is "An illustrated guide Aircraft markings", by Barry C. Wheeler. Gives FS,BS and RAL numbers as well as some 3 views of camoed aircraft. Nice write ups and rational for some nations camo's. Also included are many national roundels, Unit marking by country, tail codes and bases for USAF,USN and USMC aircraft as well as UK and West German aircraft coding. All in all a very informative book for the late 70's to mid 90's.

Wow, this sounds like what I'm looking for! Thank you. Is this the one with the sharkmouth and the 4 tailfins on the cover?

If so, they're $1.99 USD at Amazon :)

Now, something like this from the 1990's to the present would be beautiful. If anyone has more suggestions, please keep them comming!

Much love.

Yep, that's the one. Again it deals with late 70's to mid 90's.
