I just finished a troop of Strelets 1/72 scale Russian Uhlans. Painting plastic is way different than metal. After washing off the mold release, my first attempt to prime flaked off. I ended up dipping them in Rustoleum Spar Varnish. That worked great. I like Strelets because all 12 figures were different poses. volsminiatures.blogspot.com

The figures look good, your problems with the paint sticking is the only reason (that and waiting for 15mm plastics) I can think of not going for them. I'm willing to try. Every try spray paint for PVC? |

Thanks 14Bore. No I haven't tried PVC paint, just Rustoleum plastic primer. The varnish worked really wel though. I can twist the swords or guns now and there is no cracking or flaking. Another reason I went with 1/72 plastic was the cost. The Napoleonic period is new for me and until I know whether I like it or not I don't want to invest too much. I have always done ancients up to now. |

Well in for a penny, in for the pound. I will be staying with metal or at least untill 15mm plastics come out. Then maybe I'll get a corp of Frenchmen and then I'll figure out how to paint em' |

Whereas I moved away from 15mm back to my childhood and went to 1/72 in soft plastic. Modern plastics, primers and varnishes mean I do not lose paint, and I love the figures – although for me Zvezda are tops, followed by the newer HaT figures. The manufacturers seem to realise that wargamers use them, so poses are better now, and the detail is fantastic. |

I was pretty impressed by the poses in these Strelets. |

Strelets is one of those manufacturers that is made to be painted. They have nice deep detail are easy to paint and look great painted up. They consistently get not great reviews by people who just look at the bare plastic, but everyone who takes the time to paint them up seems to love them. Paint flaking off is a thing of the past. It hasn't been a relevant criticism for around 10 years now with the products available. Even PVA/White glue primer, acrylic paint and the same as a sealer works pretty well. Once you add in either brush on acrylic gesso or spray on dedicated plastic primer and a flexible sealer, you're laughing. As Volunteer pointed out, he can twist the swords and guns with no flaking. |
