Any views on the relative merits of these books?

I'm particularly interested in OOBs and anything relevant about particular units – origins, dress, quality etc.

Like Hungry Wolves is a beautiful publication. Lots of Color prints and good info. If you are a fan of the '45 then you need to get this book.

Thanks,

John

Like Hungry Wolves is a beautiful publication.

It is very definitely so, as were most of the titles in that series. Likewise, they can be expensive to obtain.

I realize the question here regards Stuart Reid, but in searching the subject online sometime back I came across "The '45" by Christopher Duffy, Cassel, 2003.

The author needs little introduction, but I had been unaware of this particular title. It runs over 600 pages, has many good maps and plans. It does have OBs for the few major actions & battles.

Of interest to this topic was Appendix II "The Jacobite Army in Review", 18 pages about clans, volunteer units and foreign battalions.

The copy I located online was new and only $4.95 USD

I have copies of both and would recommend them to anyone interested in the period. I did an Honours paper on the '45 and these titles were invaluable. Reid's book would be the first one to get for wargaming purposes as it provides all you need to know, plus has superb colour plates. Duffy's book is the 'bible' for the period and is more for those who want more depth in their reading on the subject. Get them both if you can.

Thanks for the responses. I already have the Duffy book but had overlooked the Appendix.

Staurt Reid is always to me "That Bloody Scotsman". No offence to Stuart (as I quite like him) but it's the way somone young (and very drunk) was enquiring after him once that has always stuck in my mind.

I can recommend both Like Hungry Wolves and Duffy's The '45. Reid's 1745 is also a good one.
