Near as I can tell, and this may be subject to change, the remake of Magnificent Seven is scheduled for release in 2013 and will include:

Tom Cruise: Playing "Chris" (originally played by Yul Brynner)
Matt Damon: Playing "Vin" (originally played by Steve McQueen)
Kevin Costner: Playing "Britt" (originally played by James Coburn)
Morgan Freeman: Playing "Calvera" -- the bad guy (originally played by Eli Wallach)

Still four magnificent slots unnamed so far.

Juan Kerr21 Jun 2012 4:01 p.m. PST

I don't see the point in remaking a classic!

ashill421 Jun 2012 4:02 p.m. PST

Please, please say this ain't so. The original is great, no need for money-grabbing movie moghuls to cash in. TC as Chris, you must be joking; TC couldn't act his way out of a paper bag.

AAAAHHHHHHnrun away run away

Pan Marek21 Jun 2012 4:09 p.m. PST

Only if Cruise shaves his head!

thosmoss21 Jun 2012 4:29 p.m. PST

Now wait a minute …

Magnificent Seven was a remake of The Seven Samurai, right? So as long as they tweak the name (maybe "Magnificent 7") then we're all okay?

Then we get George Clooney to jump aboard for the sequel, the Magnificent 8?

nazrat21 Jun 2012 4:33 p.m. PST

"I don't see the point in remaking a classic!"

You do realize that the western "classic" was a remake of The Seven Samurai classic, right?

There is no mention of this remake on IMDB so I would be disinclined to believe it is planned. It looks more like somebody picked the actors that would wind guys up the most and stuck them in the different roles.

nazrat21 Jun 2012 4:33 p.m. PST

Thosmoss beat me to it! Good one, man.

darthfozzywig21 Jun 2012 4:46 p.m. PST

Ok, thosmoss and nazrat have the situation covered. Moving on. :D

Mako1121 Jun 2012 4:47 p.m. PST

That's just wrong…..

A shame many of today's writers and production companies can't come up with anything original.

Rrobbyrobot21 Jun 2012 4:54 p.m. PST

Time for a remake of War of the Worlds. I mean a GOOD one! Or All Quiet on the Western Front. Maybe Forbidden Planet. I've got a real idea. Let's boycott hollyweird 'till they come up with a NEW storey idea. I mean a good one.

idontbelieveit21 Jun 2012 5:11 p.m. PST

I hope not, but

I remember when there was talk of Madonna remaking Casablanca and happily that's not come to pass. Hopefully this one won't either.

chuck05 Fezian21 Jun 2012 5:11 p.m. PST

Maybe they can find a role for Samuel L Jackson.

Tom Cruise is just plain terrible. He has no range. He is pretty much the same character in every movie. I cant seperate hime from his character. The only time I have been able to is when he was in Tropic Thunder. He was so heavily made up I didnt know it was Tom Criuse until the credits rolled.

Tom Hanks would make a great "Chris". How about Bruce Willis?

Matt Damon playing Steve McQueen's role could work or it could be a trainwreck.

Better to play it safe and not remake a classic.

No Brad Pitt?
No Leonarde di Caprio?
No Justin Bieber?

The original was full of actors who looked like tough guys, this bunch girly men/metro-sexuals/poseurs

And now they want to remake Romeo & Juliet. Like that hasn't been done to death.

And once again I'm the lone wolf – who thought the movie was just okay?

Glengarry 421 Jun 2012 6:33 p.m. PST

They could call it the "Magnificent Seven Metro-sexuals".

How can Javier Bardem not be in this movie!

Or Daniel Craig.

I'm OK with Matt Damon as Vin.

Yeah. The credits will include:
Mister Cruise's hair sylist
Mister Damon's personal assistant
Mister Costner's vocal coach

I could see a Casa Blanca remake with Pierce Brosnan as 'Rick', but who else to play all the other roles???

That might have been terrifying…Madonna might have done a topless scene…

Damon.

Wasn't that called "Shanghai Surprise"? wink

Mark, are you saying you thought the Magnificent 7 was only ok?

If so, are you a fan of westerns?

If your reply is yes and yes I agree you're likely a lone wolf. This movie is one of the best Westerns ever done.

Thanks,

John

skippy000121 Jun 2012 8:39 p.m. PST

A Battletech version of the Magnificent 7/ 7 Samurai is the only thing I would be interested in seeing.

Sloppypainter21 Jun 2012 9:02 p.m. PST

Tom Cruise! Gag! What a mistake.

Personal logo John the OFM Supporting Member of TMP21 Jun 2012 9:08 p.m. PST

How about a Bollywood dance remake?

Berlichtingen21 Jun 2012 10:19 p.m. PST

I remember when there was talk of Madonna remaking Casablanca

Not Madonna, it was Ben Affleck and J(e)Llo. Thankfully, Gigli put a very big torpedo into that terrible idea.

basileus6621 Jun 2012 11:40 p.m. PST

Now the Magnificent Seven… And what next? The Wild Bunch?

GreyONE22 Jun 2012 12:06 a.m. PST

The Wild Bunch

Yes, this one is slated to be remade too, but its too early to tell if it will go through. If the Magnificent Seven does well, we will probably also see "The Wild Bunch". I believe Tony Scott (Ridley Scott's brother) has optioned the film and is working on figuring out how to make it. So far, its just a dream, but you never know…

sillypoint22 Jun 2012 1:51 a.m. PST

Boys, you must accept that many of the younger generation, at a guess thirty something and under, do not know about Yul, Steve or Charles. Forget about James, some may recognize Robert, but perhaps not his uncle.
They have not seen Rio Bravo, Zulu and very likely Last of the Mohicans.

I like the idea of a bollywood re-make, so postmodern with latent zeitgeist tendencies.

There has already been a remake of "The Magnificent Seven":

Maybe a comedy version: Rob Schneider, Chris Rock, Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, Jerry Seinfeld, Tim Allen, and…. a lovable animated mule voiced by Whoopi Goldberg!

With Robert De Niro doing one of his excellent comedy turns as Calvera.

Box. Office. GOLD.

skyking2022 Jun 2012 4:40 a.m. PST

If this had been posted on April 1 I would have laughed. Since this is June I instantly got a knot in my stomach. Anybody remember the Alamo remake? I didn't think so!

Tom Cruise should come out of the closet and then get out of our lives!

The music soundtrack alone they couldn't do. Oh wait! Tangerine Dream!!!!

Why not a Pixar version?

The Wild Bunch!?!?! They'd modernize it and the last firefight would have a minigun or Metalstorm…Even in slow motion it would be waaaay too short.

Or a fantasy version of the Mag/Sam 7

Chris-combat mage
Lee-dark elf
Vin-ranger
Britt-duellist ex-noble
Chico-half elf runaway
Bernardo-mercenary ex-knight
Harry-dwarf fighter

Calvera-half orc or hobgoblin

Old Man-retired sorceror or priest

mad monkey 122 Jun 2012 7:22 a.m. PST

New western.

Willtij22 Jun 2012 7:50 a.m. PST

The only thing I like (so far) about this remake is that it keeps the Western genre alive. Maybe, just maybe it gets people to check out the original as it did with True Grit.

corporalpat22 Jun 2012 11:17 a.m. PST

Extra Crispy:
Gotta agree. Magnificent Seven is good for a 1960s era western, but like many classic movies there certainly is a fair amount of room for improvement.

And if I have to sit through another version of Hamlet let alone Romeo and Juliet…

zippyfusenet22 Jun 2012 12:02 p.m. PST

I thought Three Amigos was the remake of The Magnificent Seven.

The clothing in most of the early western movies looks like they just came out of a modern "country catalouge".

Yeah I think it's time for a remake of ALL QUIET…

I'll believe it when I see it.

Used to think any Western was a good movie, guns and shooting, until I saw "The Man Who Came Back"!
