If you own starships that belong to a particular gaming setting or universe – Star Fleet, 40K, Babylon 5, GZG universe, etc. – do you use those ships outside of that setting?

For example, would you use your Star Fleet ships in a game against Firestorm: Armada ships?

Are you kidding?! Just give me an excuse, Bill!evil grin

That's one of the main reasons to play games that have construction rules.

Pew pew pew!

Meiczyslaw19 Jun 2012 9:57 p.m. PST

I think the question should be, "when do you not?"

Generally speaking, I like to be able to carry through a ship's original character to the new system -- which means (for example) Imperial and Chaos fleets from BFG make appearances in most systems, because they're not too funky, while Orcs don't show up in games that don't include ramming rules.

Jemima Fawr19 Jun 2012 10:13 p.m. PST

I let them play outside until it gets dark.

Bashytubits19 Jun 2012 10:15 p.m. PST

I let them play in the dark, and in a vaccuum to boot!

Crossover games, bring them on.

I just had a large land battle on my blog with Starship Troopers infantry, Star Wars walkers, robots from Lost In Space, and bugs from SST, with a few other bits tossed in to boot. My universe is large and active.

I don't think that I have played a game where all the ships were originally intended for the same setting.

As an old Navy man, I fully believe in the adage, "Any universe in a trans-dimensional tachyon storm."

If you mean do I reuse the models, absolutely. If you mean to I try to replicate the performance of, say, a Battlestar Galactica Viper in the Star Wars universe, no – while I have no doubt that the nerd level of both of those milieux is high enough to support "technical specifications" of a degree where you could derive reasonable stats for ships of one in the game of another, that begins to border on what I do for work, so … meh.

Zyphyr20 Jun 2012 4:57 a.m. PST

I definitely do. It is half then fun, and no different than Historical players doing non-historical matchups.

Sergeant Crunch20 Jun 2012 5:11 a.m. PST

Yes

Wellspring20 Jun 2012 6:30 a.m. PST

I'm with etotheipi on this one. Reuse minis, certainly. But I don't do the pew pew pew with Picard versus Grand Moff Tarkin when suddenly the power rangers show up.

I use spaceship models all the time from multiple backgrounds, so long as they seem in scale with one another. The really "iconic" ships (Star Trek saucers or X-Wings) usually stay in their own universe.

I always wanted to know how a Klingon D-7 stood up to a T factor Meson Spinal Mount

mdauben20 Jun 2012 7:13 a.m. PST

I guess I'm in the vast minority, but I have to answer no. My three main space ship games (SFB, JC:LS, and BFG) are so visually distinct that I can not picture mixing ships.

I suppose that if we were talking about less iconic ships, I might think differently.

If that. The Klingon's shields might stand up to the other weaponry on, say, a Tigress, but I don't think the D7 is big enough to keep a T-Meson from just popping it outright, assuming it scores a hit.

The Feds would probably have a meson screen whipped up by their second encounter. The Klingons… not so much. Their ability to ignore physics to maneuver would be much more useful.

No. Each canonical universe should be discreet.

John Treadaway20 Jun 2012 12:57 p.m. PST

No – brings me out in a rash.

It's ok if they are miniatures from a set of rules that has a back-story that I may or may not employ (say Silent Death). Then they're free and easy.

But Trek against Bab5? Wash your mouth out!

John Leahy Sponsoring Member of TMP20 Jun 2012 6:23 p.m. PST

Not really. I own enough fleets in a variety of backgrounds that simply gaming in those universes will provide me with more than enough game options. I do own some genric style ships that I use in some rules.

Thanks,

John

I see nothing wrong with sicing a squadron of Constitution-class heavy cruisers on a fleet of scum-sucking Shadow ships, thank you very much!evil gringuinness

I don't play any set background, so for me I will use any ship I like the look of in my own universe setting.

Dasher24 Jun 2012 9:13 p.m. PST

Of course. We play Ful Thrust/More Thrust, where much of the fun is in comparing designs meant to model the different fleet philosophies of the various universes.
Plus, cool looking ships are cool looking ships, so I'm basically in agreement with Legion 4.
