How would the Germans look in the Marcomanni Wars?

Would there be much difference between this period and the Teutoberg Forest period?

Any good books on the Marcomanni Wars?

Tuetoburger wald 9AD in what is now Northwest Germany.

The Marcommanic Wars, 160AD in what is now S/SE Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania and maybe Italy.

The last I checked, the thinking was that the Marcommanic tribe(s) probably were influenced more by Roman trade, possibly using some imported Roman weapons, if nothing else.

Go look up the Column of Marcus Aurelius.
Here is a book discussing the column: link
(Haven't read it, don't know if it is any good or not--but it is fairly recent)

I think there is an Osprey "German Warrior" with some pics of slightly-less-ancient Germans. IIRC some have strange, tall helms, I'll dig it out later if I get a chance. I don't think anyone makes them, but Aventine Keith has talked about making a small range of Ancient Germans, for this period. IIRC some of the BTD Germans are close-ish.

@Lord Raglan, I would recommend you try and obtain a copy of the Concord series Barbarians #6004 pages 20 / 21 and for references to other Germannic tribes pages 22 to 25 and 28 to 33 (last pages are hitting 6th cent) and as mentioend above the Osprey book Romes Enemies: Germanics and Dacians is of some use as well as the other Concord Imperial Rome)for some pictorial ideas (if you don't have a copy drop me an email at trajanic@gmail.com). For further detailed reading (academic) then I would recommend M.Todd.

The Germannic tribes by this time were not as naked or semi naked warriors as at the time of the Teutoberg Forest campaign. The tribes were organising themselves into fairly structured societies created by confederations of numerous tribes. This brought with it improved trade, and allowed access to materials not always available to the humble warrior (I am excluding the commitatus from this).

For figures a mixture is best as the Marcomanni allied themselves with other confederations and were close allies (as well as fighting them) with the Dacians for a considerable time…..

I hope this helps.

@RN Sulentic thank you for the link – not seen this yet, but I've placed an order now. Many thanks.

Marcus,

I send you an email on a couple of days ago, check your spam box just in case it has bounced in there.

I would imagine that Aventine will produce some great looking Germans for this period, however in the meantime Musketeer Miniatures do some Germans, are these suitable for this period?
