Exploring plans to rebuild part of the Alamo mission, August 17-19 at the Alamo.

A quote from the article: "Artist-historian George Nelson said he will have bronze panels showing the Alamo's evolution from a mid-1700s mission to a modern plaza on display at the weekend demonstration."

Were it up to me--I'd raze the entire Plaza and rebuild the old mission brick for brick. But some of the buildings directly across from the chapel are now over one hundred years old. So that's probably not gonna happen. And the lobby of the post office, located at what was the heart of the fighting on the north wall, contains the gorgeous Texas history mural painted by the WPA in the '30's. Dang: link

The Ripley's Believe it or Not "museum" could be torn down for all I care. Having visited the site a couple of times it is pretty nice as is. Though my tour of the Alamo wasn't the usual way people get to see it. I saw it at night with VIPs and no tourists.

Is there still a McDonalds across the street from the Alamo?

Nah. That's down the block on Commerce. There used to be a Burger King directly across from the chapel. "Chili stands" once sold food on the plaza for a few pennies. I guess modern fast food chains are the closest equivalent. The building on the right side of the following picture is actually the Alamo Barracks. The old post office that marks the rough location of the north wall is in the background:

Good plan. The American women I've met who've been there always say 'There's not much there'
