If that is all you have to contribute to the conversation, it is very annoying. So, it has been a previous topic. SO WHAT? All it shows is that you are a , and a know-it-all and
annoying. |

Oh, thanks. It all makes sense now. |
DesertScrb | 15 Jun 2012 6:59 p.m. PST |
I don't see the big deal, John. Sometimes when someone starts a new thread on the same topic, it's helpful to point back to the earlier thread--especially if the two threads are on different boards. |

Yeah, I got that when I posted a youtube video link in the lounge. Another member quickly pointed out that my post was old hat for the video had been mentioned in a previous thread over a year ago. |

if they are to lazy to search previous topics, I'm going to be to lazy to summarise the previous threads. Anybody know who makes miniatures of the Stargate SG1 team members? |

Yea, posting a link to a relative discussion, on a topic someone is interested in is completely a waste of time, since clearly the person inquiring about the subject wouldn't want to know anything about that. (extremely heavy sar'casm off, temporarily, but may be use'd a'gain in the near future, if require'd) |

Unless it is accompanied by a snotty comment, it general means, "Look here. I might have saved you a bunch of work." |

I'm often grateful for it. Even if I have searched for something I might not have searched for the terms used in another thread. |

The ones posting the links are anal? |
Oh Bugger | 16 Jun 2012 2:02 a.m. PST |
Yes people being helpful by providing a link germane to the subject under discussion deserve severe sanction. I mean don't they know they could instead be posting inanities of no interest to most TMPers. Once again the Moth circles the flame. |

DesertScrb: I don't see the big deal, John. Sometimes when someone starts a new thread on the same topic, it's helpful to point back to the earlier thread--especially if the two threads are on different boards. It's not posting the link that's annoying – it's being so lazy that the post consists entirely of "TMP link" (or worse, "link") without any effort to explain what's along the link. It doesn't take too much effort to type an accompanying sentence to explain the context – especially if the topic along the link discusses the topic in a different manner to the thread in which the link is posted. |

"Yes people being helpful by providing a link germane to the subject under discussion deserve severe sanction." But it isn't being helpful. It's being snarky-- in essence saying, "It's ALREADY been posted, stupid!" Most of the time there isn't even much of a discussion on the original thread(s) and it's just a post with the exact same link. It'd be like walking up to a conversation already going on, interrupting and saying it had already been talked about, then sauntering off, secure in your superiority and incredible knowledge. As is mentioned above when the link one provides is a discussion, and the person putting the link up says something along the line of "This thread provides some additional info
" THEN it's being helpful. |

I couldn't have said it better myself, Jerry! |

It's like those who get outraged that the question has been asked 6 months ago. They are like senile teachers who lectured on "Fortresses in the Spanish Netherlands and the Balance of Power" last spring and then get enraged when someone asks about that in a new class. Much of TMP is repetitive (including obnoxious Polls
but that's another story altogether
) but I see no harm in asking the same question more than once or posting the same story more than once. |

Mako11 | 16 Jun 2012 12:24 p.m. PST |
I think you may be reading too much into it. Perhaps the people posting the link are just busy, so aren't being snarky, but trying to be helpful without wasting a lot of their time. Sure, I'm willing to admit that some are being snarky perhaps, but if you get a link to the info needed, is it not still helpful? |

I think it is a bit of gentle oneupmanship. It's the same instinct that kicks in when someone starts telling a joke that you know, and you just can't resist interrupting with, "I've heard this one before." |
| Kaoschallenged | 16 Jun 2012 3:08 p.m. PST |
I guess that it saves some time posting the exact same information that may have been posted before on the same subject? As for myself. Meh. I couldn't care less really. No need to get upset, annoyed or to name call IMO. Robert |

[ahCHOO! sniff.] At least it points at an answer, instead of the fashion around here a few years back of answering questions with "Google it." |
