Those guys did well before photoshop type programs came along!

I always like the 'Dig for Victory' wartime poster showing a left leg pushing a spade into the soil, despite the fact that he is missing a right leg!

When I learned real photography, not digital, we had to learn to retouch photos. That was easily one of the hardest, most maddening classes I took.
I understand why people went gaga over Photoshop when it came out.
