Anyone read this? What's the verdict? It's marketed as a Flashman style book .. harumph.I'm skeptical but open minded.

I don't know the book, but as an historical figure its hard to find someone more colorful than General Wilkinson.

Jamie does not come across all that well in Gore Vidal's Burr either. grin

Is this the same Wilkinson who so badly botched the battle of Chryslers Farm in 1813?

Yes, the same: link

And the fifth county formed (in 1802) in the Mississippi Territory was (and still is) named for him.

Just ordered this this book (already have a reprint of Wilkinson's "Memoirs of My Own Times").

Interesting dude in early USA history to say the least. Who was the more consumate "traitor"/villain… Burr or Wilkinson?

Wilkinson certainly comes across as the more adaptable, more cunning plotter. Also better as a "survivor".

Wonder if the Mexican-Texan-American war would have occured a decade or so earlier if he had not died (in Mexico) in the 1820's.

Wilkinson was a Spanish agent, as I understand, who got Zebulon Pike all jamed up in the West. Jefferson (another scoundrel, in my opinion) had Wilkenson appointed to enforce the Embargo with troops in upstate NY.

Just got and read it – a very good first in a (hopefully) a series of 'Flashman-esque' memoirs. I can't speak for the historical accuracy or portrayal of the main characters but it was well written and I hope there is a second in the future
