Dang! I was stoked to think a Japanese soldier served in the Napoleonic Wars – there goes my dream of reenacting the period…

From what I recall…there were two holdouts that surrendered in the early 80s. They were not soldiers, but part of a labor unit. After the war they ended up with communists rebels in Malaysia and just stayed until finally coming in on their own.

Was the Banzai Charge ever effective against the Infantry Square?

No Surrender: My Thirty-Year War by Hiroo Onoda is a great read. Details his survival skills and encounters as he continued on with WW2. Wiki indicates he is still alive and kicking! Now that is saying something.

If memory serves, there was a Japanese-Russian clash on Hokkaido in 1809 or thereabouts…

I remember hearing of, and then reading about, Hiroo Onoda (nickname was "Hironko"), at the time. As part of the Wikipedia article, it is stated that he was "relieved of duty by his former commanding officer"; as far as I remember, that officer was actually brought to the island to order Onoda to "step down".
